"Occupying a small portion of the island of Borneo" should refer to the country...so "b" and "e" are out.
In "a" we are using past perfect...no need to use past perfect as no sequencing of events .
"d" is faulty because "famously pristine rain forests" is the reason and the result is "why their was increased in the no. of visitors " so the result part comes as the modifier (rule of +in modifier).
Also in "d" the "the tiny country of Brunei Darussalam increased" here the action (verb) increased is done by the country but country didn't do the action of increasing so its wrong.
So we are left with "c" only
