A gas pipe has an outside diameter of 24 inches. The steel wall of the pipe is 1 inch thick. What is the area of the cross-section of the steel wall of the pipe?

A. 23π

B. 47π

C. 147π

D. 529π

E. 575π

Area of cross-section of the steel wall of the pipe = π*(24)^2 - π*(23)^2
= π(24 - 23)(24 + 23)
= 47π

IMO Option B

In the question the diameter is given for the pipe, so won't the equation be π(12-11)(12+11)=23π?

Diameter of the total pipe = 24
Deduct 2 inches (1 inch from top and bottom) from the diameter to get the diameter of the inner pipe = 22

Find the difference in the area between the two
12^2 pi - 11^2pi
=23pi
