A woman decided to walk down the escalator in a shopping mall. The woman found that if she walks down 26 steps, then she requires 30 seconds to reach the bottom. If she walks down 34 steps, then she requires only 18 seconds to get to the bottom. Time is measured from the moment the top step begins to descend to the moment the woman steps off from the last step at the bottom. What is the height of the escalator in steps?

When x walks down 26 steps, she reaches in 30 seconds and when x walks down 34 steps, she takes 18 seconds.
She walks 34-26 or 8 steps more, and she saves 30-18=12 seconds.
So who is travelling these 8 steps in 12 seconds—The Escalator.
Now let’s take any of the scenario
26 steps and escalator takes 30 secs.
If the escalator covers 8 steps in 12 seconds, it will cover 30*8/12=20 steps in 30 secs.
In these 30 seconds, the escalator covers 20 steps while x covers 26 steps, so total of 20+26 or 46 steps.

lets assume escalator moving at x steps/sec
now as per given condition,
The height of escalator,
\(26 + 30x = 34 + 18x\)
\(12x = 8\)
Therefore \(x = \frac{2}{3}\)
Substitute in Height of escalator equation.
\(Height = 26 + 30x = 26 + 20 = 46\)
Answer is B.
