I was confused between B and C, but eventually went with B. Can some one please explain why B is wrong ?

Sentence Correction basically relies on (1) Meaning & (2) Sentence Structure
Original Sentence's intended meaning: Researchers have increased their knowledge of the Cell Division process, mainly by using electron microscopy.
The focus: Electron microscopy instrumental in enhancing the researchers' knowledge.
Option B: Through the competent use of advanced electron microscopy,...
This part of the sentence shifts the focus from "the use of the electron microscope" to "the competent use" . Focus is shifted from "What was used" to "How it was used"
The meaning is thus altered and doesn't reflect the originally intended meaning. Hence B is incorrect.
Option C fits the intended meaning correctly.
