According to United Nations estimates, more than three percent of the world’s population currently lives in a country other than where they were born.

Concept: This is clearly a comparison question. than gives the indication of clear comparison.
Concept 2: You use where to refer to a place (a specific location) or a situation. While which is used to refer a distinction between 2 products.

A) other than where they were born
I don't see any problem in this option. Though I will keep this option in bank.

B) other than those of where they were born
We are referring to countries where people were born and countries where people are living. those of where does not fit the exact comparison here.

C) other than what they were born in
Here, it will be better if we would have use other than those they were born in. what is used to refer to a place (source / destination) or a situation. eg. What is your destination ? AND Where is your drop? Can you see the difference in what both these lines mean.

D) other than the one in which they were born
which refers to a condition and not place.

E) other than that of their birth country
that already refers to the country. Why are we re-referring to the birth country? This redundancy brings completely negates the statement.

The only option remaining is A and as we can find errors in other options.
A

EDIT:

So my logic was incorrect as where is not equivalent to the country (Official Explanation). And Option D correctly uses one in which

According to United Nations estimates, more than three percent of the world’s population currently lives in a country other than where they were born.

A) other than where they were born - Concise. Correct.

B) other than those of where they were born - Wordy. The comparison is faulty. Incorrect.

C) other than what they were born in - 'what' isn't for a place. Incorrect.

D) other than the one in which they were born - 'where' is more concise than 'the one in which'. Close but Incorrect.

E) other than that of their birth country - 'that' and country are redundant. Incorrect.

Hence, the answer is Option (A).

According to United Nations estimates, more than three percent of the world’s population currently lives in a country other than where they were born.

A) other than where they were born- This option makes the meaning unclear by suggesting that the population lives in 2 countries. It says the "world’s population currently lives in a country other than where they were born"

B) other than those of where they were born- No logical antecedent for those

C) other than what they were born in - what doesn't make sense in this sentence

D) other than the one in which they were born-Clear meaning even though it's longer

E) other than that of their birth country-that here refers to country so it is redundant

KUDOS if helpful :please:

Hi sir,

I chose answer E even though I could not find an antecedent for "that", since all the other answer had the pronoun "they".

Could you further explain which is the antecedent for the pronoun "they", since population is singular and people is not mentioned in the sentence

Thanks
