The principal's recent proposal to separate math classes into fast and slow sections is intended to help the slow students, but instead will only hurt them. The principal feels that if the less adept students are put in a special section, they will be able to proceed at a slower pace, which will enable them to absorb their lessons more properly. On the contrary, these students will perceive themselves as slow and act accordingly, lowering their own standards as their teachers lower their expectations of them. Students who had struggled in class to avoid the label "slow" will stop struggling, and thus learn that much more slowly.

The author of the passage above assumes that

A. slow students do not need special attention in class
B. students' perceptions of themselves affect their ability to learn
C. slow students can learn from faster ones in the same class
D. faster students are not as motivated by self-esteem as are slower students
E. teachers generally expect too little from their slower students

The author of the passage above assumes that

A. slow students do not need special attention in class
There is no information that author believes that slow students do not need special attention in class. Choice A is out.

B. students' perceptions of themselves affect their ability to learn
This will affect our conclusion. If student's perceptions will affect their ability to learn then putting them in slower sections will be counter productive. Choice B is correct.

C. slow students can learn from faster ones in the same class
No information to say that Author believes that. Choice C is out.

D. faster students are not as motivated by self-esteem as are slower students
We are not talking about faster students here. Out of scope. Choice D is out.

E. teachers generally expect too little from their slower students
No information given to believe this. Choice E is out too.

Answer B

The main Assumption of the author is = Dividing students in class between Fast and Slow might help the FAST students but will certainly not help the SLOW students, thinking they're not good which might Demotivate or change their morale.

Anything which is near in the options is the answer.

A. slow students do not need special attention in class - Nothing Mentioned ( X )

B. students' perceptions of themselves affect their ability to learn - Fits perfectly with the Pre-thinking ( ✔ )

C. slow students can learn from faster ones in the same class - Nothing Mentioned ( X )

D. faster students are not as motivated by self-esteem as are slower students - OUT OF SCOPE ( X )

E. teachers generally expect too little from their slower students[/quote] - OUT OF SCOPE ( X )
