Hi there,
I started my GMAT journey about 15 months ago. Reading about Masters programs, while in Engineering school, the salary, the fee, and what not! Bought the OG 2019, just having a "maybe attempt" in mind. At that point, I was busy preparing for CAT(the Indian GMAT).
After bombing my CAT, I thought of GMAT. Given an uncanny similarity in syllabus and structure, it didn't sound too bad.
But, I never went through with it. Only until 6 months ago, when I decided to actually study study for GMAT. Started with the OG, abut 10 questions a day, while working full time. That lasted 2 weeks until I lost my drive! The questions looked so easy that I contemplated taking a blank attempt, no prep, nada. Boy would that have been bad!
And then, the pandemic kicked in. Leaving me in my hometown, lot's of time and favorable environment. I spent a good chunk of that slacking, doing nothing. Until a month ago, when I finally decided to give it my best.
Started with OG Online, did my math. ~800 questions was not enough to keep me busy through a month. I looked for resources and came across this forum. Boy does it not stop giving!
Joined on 23 July, took my test on 25 August. Result? 730, Q50, V40, IR6.
What did I do?
My strategy, as always, was to do as many problems as possible. Just as an AI would do, learn by volume, rather than quality. Did, not bother with error logs as such. Although kept record of what I was weak in. For example, boldface questions, etc.
My total here2316/755 75.4% correct
Quant :-
926/226 80.4% correct
Verbal :-
1390/529 72.4% correct
As one could see, I spent more time on verbal.
Why? Started with a diagnostic test, no preparation before. A 690, Q50 and V31. Naturally, I knew working on Verbal was going to help more.
How it went on the forumI started with Quant, hit the hardest 700+ problems. Was a little over confident after the Q50 diagnostic, got 2/20 right in a practice set. Devastated. Even remember asking mods here if those were real gmat questions, lol.
Got into 600-700 problems, did em for few days, only to realize they were not helping. Went back to 700+, never looked back.
Started with verbal, 600 problems. Was getting some wrong in SC, realized there is a knowledge gap. Took the Manhattan SC guide, skimmed(big mistake) through it, did all it's problems, improved.
Moved to 600-700 problems, all the way my goal was to get double digit problems right, i.e 10+/15. Would hit em sometimes, sometimes not. Went on for 2 weeks, which at the end, had me hitting 10 at least, always.
Spoke with someone on the forum, needed 90+ accuracy on 600-700 and 70+ on 700 in Verbal.
Tried 700 problems, huge blowout. Getting maybe 5-6/15 right. Realized, need to reread the guide. This time, took 2 days to read and understand, without the jargon. Went back to SC 700+ and voila! Got into double digits. 3rd week over.
4th and the final week! At this point I knew, making any changes would do more harm than good. Kept practicing Verbal exclusively. Took 24th as an off day with just 1 mock.
AdviceStart with a diagnostic test, always. At the end take it again! Buy test 3 and test 4, you might see few repeat problems, as people share them here, but they're worth it. Confidence is key, test give you loads of it!
Do not, under any circumstance make major changes to you routine in the final week, it can blow your score. Do what your instinct says.
Another trick for Online test takers -> If you can finish Quant with about 10 minutes left, do not rush into the Verbal section. Use the 10 minutes as a break to prepare; remember, you will not get a break between the two.
And finally, practice a lot! Practice enough that when you a see problem, you can relate with one you did before!
