Please provide me valuable insights into my profile and areas of improvement. Upenn Wharton SF Campus is my first choice of preference.
Hey
shavarna,
You have a pretty competitive profile
Academically, your post-graduate GPA showcases your academic prowess which coupled with your international exposure will help differentiate you from the crowd. Most schools are looking to add diversity to their cohort and your background gives you a unique perspective which definitely provides a valuable addition to their program.
While your grades do play an important part, your extracurricular activities and your other endeavors matter as well because AdComs are looking for applicants with holistically developed profiles. Thus, it is essential to shed light on the endeavors you’ve taken up at the clubs, associations, fest, and events you managed or participated in during your undergrad/postgrad.
For your extracurricular activities, you have a lot of varied roles in teaching and volunteering for social causes, which are impressive value additions. Highlighting how these roles have helped you grow and influenced your life would help put together an impactful application. You can also shine down on the leadership skills that you developed while serving as a Business consultant/advisor for the several start-ups that you helped. Additionally, your hobbies in varied fields like rock-climbing, music, and skydiving highlights your team spirit and the urge to constantly self-renovate yourself.
As far as the GMAT goes, an overall score of 700 would give you a chance to target the executive MBA programs in most of the top B schools. However, since you’re inclined towards Wharton, whose GMAT cutoff is in the range is around 730+, a retake is what I would highly recommend.
As far as your work experience goes, since an Executive MBA is a manager's degree and requires significant work experience, your 7 years of work experience would put you at par with other applicants. In order to stand out from the crowd, you most certainly should focus on your leadership roles and major projects of your work and how these experiences helped to develop and further groom your skills and knowledge. Since you lack big brands in your work experience, you can compensate by providing an apt reason as to why you chose these firms, how you have gone beyond the role, any initiatives you took, and any kind of impact created to showcase an equally competitive profile.
Since you graduated a while ago, you can also take up some certifications to upskill yourself and showcase your interest in the field of management. This could further improve your profile and give you the required competitive edge.
Coming on to your target school, Wharton falls under the dream category. Dream schools have a very stringent acceptance rate of 12-15%. Looking at your profile you have a 40% chance of getting admitted to the schools in the dream category provided you back your profile with a very strong application which consists of your Essay, Lor and Resume as it carries 30% of an impact on your chances of bagging an admit in any of the top B-schools.
Moreover, in order to hedge your bets wisely, it is always better to target a mix of dream and competitive schools.
