Question

A soda machine at a local arcade has only one bottle remaining of each of the following flavors: grape, lemon, strawberry, root beer, and cola. Three neighborhood children, Grace, Rupert, and Zane are arguing about who will get each of the remaining sodas. Grace has said that she will let Zane go first, but not Rupert. Rupert has said he will let Grace go first, if she lets him go second, while Zane has said that he doesn’t care who goes first as long as he can buy either the strawberry or lemon soda. If each of the kids will not choose the root beer, and Rupert selects the lemon soda, which of the following would be a selection by Grace that would not allow each student to select a soda based on the restrictions the kids have set for themselves?
 
For each of the following conditions, select a Selection and a Soda that would describe a scenario for Grace that would preclude all the children from selecting a soda acceptable to each of them. Make only two selections, one in each column.

Because Grace has no listed soda preference, it logically follows that the most restricted scenarios will involve Grace going first. If Grace goes first, then Rupert must go second selecting the lemon soda. Because, Zane doesn't care who goes first as long as he can select the lemon or strawberry soda, if Grace goes first and picks the strawberry soda, then Zane won't be able to satisfy his condition of choosing either the lemon or strawberry soda.

Correct answer:

Selection  "1st"

Soda  "Strawberry"

I think this is a  poor-quality  question and I don't agree with the explanation. I tried out this problem and I believe something is wrong here.

the question is asking (twice): 
1. "Grace that would not allow each student to select a soda based on the restrictions the kids have set for themselves?"
2. "select a Selection and a Soda that would describe a scenario for Grace that would preclude all the children from selecting a soda acceptable to each of them."

Given the specific words of (1)EACH student and (2)ALL children, by choosing the 1st 'selection' for Grace we don't restrict/preclude Rupert of choosing his selection, only Zane.
We are asked to find restriction for both and we restrict only Zane here.

I think this is a  poor-quality  question and I don't agree with the explanation. question term: "preclude all the children from selecting a soda acceptable to each of them"

--> answer:
Grace doesn't have preference -->any option is acceptable, Rupert can select what he wants (lemon)
--> No answer key for this question

The question say " Each should not have their preferences met". It means all three of G, R, Z should not have their preferences met.

For this to apply, if any one does not get their preference, the condition is met.

For example, if Zayn does not get what he wants, but other two gets their preferences. Then the condition will hold.
