Hello GMAT club friends,
This is a late post but I believe its still better than never
Little about me : I am an IT engineer from India so quant was not a problem. I knew verbal will give me a hard time.
I started my prep on Jan 2019 hoping to get it done by July. Ordered OGs and Manhattan guides and started rolling of. Just after getting familiarized with the question pattern, I gave 1st mock to check where I stand.
I scored 640 ( Q 49/50 (dont remember)), verbal 27). Not a bad start, right?
I started with verbal as my obvious step. I went through Manhattan verbal guides and made notes. I also did topic wise gmatclub questions along with OGs, making proper
error log. After 2-3 months, I started giving gmatclub quant mocks. I used to get 49-51. I was okay here.
By the way, gmatclub quant mocks are gems. For verbal, I orderd e-gmat verbal plan. SC and CR are amazing here. Really helped in getting me into verbal zone.
Next I bought veritas mocks. 4 times I got 710 and once I got 740. As my target was 740-760, I realized I need to work on my time to get this mark. I was getting 36,37,38 and 39 in verbal. This plateau
After more practice, I started official mocks. Booked the date : 18th September 2019 ( I wont forget this date ever).
These were my mock scores
690,710,650,720,710,720.
Quite similar to veritas. I knew what will happen on 18th. With heavy heart, I went to appear for the actual exam. I couldn't believe what I saw on my screen.
600 What??????? Really?? I was crying. Broken. I knew this year got done now. I will miss the deadlines now. I took 1 month rest. Went on a trip.
Came back to senses again. I talked to many gmat takers, discussed a lot.
It was a time to change my strategy.
My quant was good. 49 and 50 was consistent. The only fight was with VERBAL
SC:
Earlier : I was wasting a lot of time to read the sentence. I often was reading sentences twice, wasting a lot of time. Once I used to find the error, I used to doubt myself.
Now : I started reading slowly, making sure I will read only once. I was getting more confident that if I found the error, that is the error. Why 2nd thoughts? Solve it and move ahead.
Result: In any mocks,
MGMAT/Official, I was getting only 1/2 wrong.
CR: My CR was fine. I was doing okay. But still found some scope of improvement
Earlier: Same reading mistake.
Now : Reading mistake improved.
RC: Nightmare
Earlier: No matter what I did, I was not getting it right. Saw Ron's videos, e-gmat, etc etc... Nothing helped me. I was getting lost in details of the RC. Could not understand the main idea, hence everything was above my head.
Now : I started reading in a different way. I used to read mostly subjects and verbs, removing modifiers. It really helped me to understand what author is saying.
Result : Better understanding of the passage.
For timing:
I applied my office strategy here. Breaking the exam into smaller chunks. (Agile methodology, any IT professional will understand this )
I used to make my own smaller tests with 1.8 min / ques. (65/36 = 1.8). Few tests 10 ques, few 15.
I worked on my guessing strategy as well, in case I need to guess any question.
Soon I improved my timing. I was able to finish the test on time. (In all the above mocks, I was randomly guessing last one or 2 questions in the verbal)
Mocks 2:
Manhattan - 710. I was told if you get 710 here, you might get 730 in real. I was going to book the exam. But another gift was at the doorstep. COVID-19. Everything changed. The whole world into lockdown.
Nothing I can do.
I was simply solving few questions daily to be in touch. No clue when will the center open. I started attempting mocks again, hoping everything will be fine. 720/730 was consistent. I was happy.
Lockdown got extended.
I exhausted all my mocks. Then thanks to GMAC, online exam came. I re-started. I rest my official mocks. I attempted them months back, so no chance I will remember any question.
Special thanks to
generis and
VeritasKarishma . I used to wait for their answers and explanations. Reallly helpful
Again 710-720. I was like what??? Now again I got disappointed.
Finally I booked for Aug 2020.
Finally I got 720. I was not very happy but was okay. I knew this is it now. I need to apply fast. I was sure I will make into a good B-School.
I applied and finally received 3 admits, with 2 gave me 50% scholarship. These offer letters made my day
Learnings from this year long experience:
Just keep on trying. You should not regret afterwards that you didnt try. Though my target score was 740-750, now I am satisfied because I gave my best. I worked on myself. I never imagined I will get these scholarships.
Reaching from 600 to 720 was not easy for me and I am sure many of you are also facing the same struggle.
So all the best

Let me know if I can be on any help (GMAT/Applications/Interviews)
