Posting my experience so others can learn from it.
I tried to take the online GMAT exam today. 24 hours before and right before my exam I ran the operating system check. My computer passed and I verified that all other applications/window were closed. I was using my work laptop (that's the only laptop I have right now) and did not expect to face any issue, especially once the system check deemed my laptop fine.
Once I spoke with the proctor/completed the check-in process my test started. It started out normally but after ~3 minutes a window popped up saying that another application was running on my laptop and I needed to close out of the non-test platform application. The clock kept ticking while this message was up so panic started in. I told myself it would be ok though. I pressed "ok" and it relaunched the testing application. During that time I also verified on my laptop that no other program was running. I had also never even heard of the other application my laptop was supposedly running. I was then able to rejoin the test where I left off.
After another ~3 minutes the same thing happened. I click ok and once again verified that no other application was open. Once I re-joined the test, I reached out to the proctor to see if they could help. They were not able to help and again a few minutes later the notice came up. After the notice came up this 3rd time I again spoke with the proctor to see if they could troubleshoot. The proctor suggested that if the window came up again I should close out of the test platform completely and make sure everything on my laptop is closed down. When the window eventually pops up again, I did as suggested and closed out completely.
Once I was out of the program, I tried to rejoin my test by going through the log on process again. However, this time there was no way for me to join as my test was "in progress". My only option was to contact the help desk for support. After speaking with someone, they logged a ticket (I'll hear back in 24-48 hours) and confirmed there was no way I could rejoin or finish my exam.
After speaking with the customer support personnel, I did some research to try to understand the application was that was supposedly running on my laptop. I found out that this application runs in the background and makes my work laptop able to communication with my work systems. Unfortunately, there is no way for me to stop running this program. I was not aware this system was on my laptop either.
For now, I'm waiting to hear if I can reschedule the exam and trying to find someone with a spare personal laptop. Please learn from my experience and do not use a work laptop. Even if you think it's ok, it may running a non-compatible system that you are not even aware of.
