At the outset, I would like to thank few members of this amazing universe
bb and
Bunuel : Thank you for creating and nurturing this amazing platform. I have immense gratitude to this forum as I cannot thank enough for ways this forum has positively impacted my life.
egmat: Your sentence correction concept files is
what every non-native needs to build his or her SC skills. Just Hands down!!
ChiranjeevSingh: Chiranjeev Singh is a GMAT Tutor based in India. He scored a 770 in his first attempt after preparing for a week. You may lift up your dropped jaw and read further. CJ's website -
https://gmatwithcj.com offers content that can elevate your scores to V40 and above. I was able to do that, so can you! If you are looking to raise your score, then look no further. He has collated a list of all 4000 unique Verbal and Quant questions that have appeared in various editions of Official Guides/Exams so far. That too for FREE ("Free" is the clickbait for Indians)
RonPurewal: Game of Thrones slays your favourite characters. Ron Purewal's study hall videos will slay your misconceptions. This forum has a repository of 100+ recorded videos of his sessions
GMATNinja and
VeritasKarishma: Your lucid explanations of several official questions have really helped me
1st GMAT attempt - 600 (Q- insignificant; V-shameful)My first GMAT attempt was in Aug 2014. I studied the Manhattan Study SC guide and the Aristotle guides for Verbal. I practiced numerous official questions. I scored 690 & 700 in the free official mocks. I thought to myself that I could easily score a 720+ on the real test (I was so stupid). I scored 600. I vividly remember that long walk from the test-center (Remember DiCaprio's front-crawl across a driveway in "Wolf of Wall Street", just that I was not on pills, but deep remorse after seeing a 600. (Failure was always a bitter pill for me to swallow. I am wired (weird) like that)
In Oct 2014, I wrote the Indian version of GMAT (called CAT) and got into one of the one of the top B-School in India.
I got into one of the Big 4s. I noticed a considerable number of folks who had an Indian MBA, applying to foreign B Schools for a second MBA. Personally, I wanted to work outside India. That’s when I thought of applying to a top global MBA program.
It was in Jan 2020 that I was again bitten by the GMAT bug. I enrolled for the
e-GMAT course. I was heavily impressed by their SC course.
Finally,
I wrote my GMAT on 19 Feb 2021. I scored a 730 (Q49, V40). Honestly, I was a bit disappointed by the Q49. No self-respecting Indian engineer worth his/her salt can digest a Q49 😊. Anyways, I made peace with my past!
So here are my tips for any non-native who is struggling with GMAT:a) If Sentence Correction is troubling you, please enrol yourself in the eGMAT SC course. I diligently watched and practiced their SC concept files. In fact, I even started implementing those concepts in my email writings, report writing etc.
b) Please follow Chiranjeev Singh's website. His repository of Official Questions is GOLD that is freely available. I would create a self-proctored Verbal test by manually selecting 12 SC, 12 CR and 4 passages from his website and solve it within 67 minutes. I religiously followed this ritual for 2 MONTHS. In this process, I solved ~600 Official SC and CR questions each and ~145 Official RC passages.
He follows a very unique approach to SC - He reads the SC question stem by breaking down the sentence into its components. This approach worked wonders for me in all the three sections – SC, CR and RC. In fact, I have imbibed the technique in my daily reading when I feel that I am not able to understand what I read.
c)
Error log - I had exported official questions from CJ's website into an
error log excel sheet (attached herewith for your reference)
d) For Quant,
GMAT Club tests are the best. Practice all the 20+ tests in time-bound manner. Above all, analyse them as well. Mr Bunuel has posted detailed solutions for all of them. What more do you need?
Last but not least, the ONLY thing that stands between you and an amazing GMAT score is
your attitude and hard work (not lack of guidance, lack of quality study materials)
