A monkey is climbing up a greased pole, ascends 2 m and slips 1 metre in alternate min. If the pole is 12 m high, how long will it take him to reach the top?

(A) 25 min
(B) 24 min
(C) 23 min
(D) 22.5 min
(E) 22 min
Solution:

We see that for every two minutes, the monkey really only ascends 2 - 1 = 1 meter, except for the last two meters of the pole, where it takes him only 1 minute to reach the top of the pole. Therefore, the number of minutes it takes him to reach the top is:

(12 - 2) x 2 + 1 = 21

Answer: 21

Cumulative in 2 minutes it will climb = 2-1 = 1 metre

So for 10 metre = 10*2 = 20 mins

And in next one minute he will climb additional 2m to reach the total 12 metre height
Therefore total time = 20 + 1 = 21 minutes
