OFFICIAL EXPLANATIONProject SC Butler: Sentence Correction (SC2)
THE PROMPTQuote:
During the four years that the Kepler telescope was in operation,
it observed about 3.2 million star transits and about 3500 exoplanet candidates were identified by it.The Kepler telescope did two things.
On the GMAT and in formal writing, almost always, do not switch from active to passive voice or vice versa in the same sentence.
There are exceptions, but this question is testing that issue.
The sentence should use the active voice to describe both things or the passive voice, but not a mixture of active and passive.
We keep the same voice to maintain parallelism.
Active voice:
It observed about 3.2 million star transits.
Active voice:
It identified about 3500 exoplanets.Passive voice:
About 3.2 million star transits were observed by it.Passive voice:
About 3500 exoplanets were observed [by it].THE OPTIONSQuote:
A)
it observed about 3.2 million star transits and about 3500 exoplanet candidates
were identified by it.
• Active voice incorrectly switches to passive voice
→
It observed . . . is active whereas
exoplanets were identified by it is passive, breaking the parallel structure and creating stylistic dissonance.
ELIMINATE A
Quote:
B) about 3.2 million star transits
were observed by it and
it identified about 3500 exoplanet candidates.
• Passive voice incorrectly switches to active voice
→
Transits were observed . . . is passive whereas
it identified is active, once again breaking parallel structure and creating stylistic dissonance.
Quote:
C)
it observed about 3.2 million star transits and about 3500 exoplanet candidates
were identified.
• Active voice incorrectly switches to passive voice (same problem as that in option A)
→
It observed . . . is active whereas
exoplanets were identified is passive.
ELIMINATE C
Quote:
D)
it observed about 3.2 million star transits,
also identifying about 3500 exoplanet candidates.
• tough call
→
it observed and
also identifying are not parallel, but GMAC often subordinates parallelism to this construction (i.e., comma + ing)
→ this answer is certainly better than the first three, but
1) The Kepler telescope did two things, and it appears that the issue being tested is impermissible "voice switching."
2) The "also identifying" seems a little "tacked on."
In this construction, the participle phrase is correct but slightly misplaced, as if the second event were less important than the first.
(This ___ing is a participle adjective phrase that modifies "it" = the Kepler telescope.)
KEEP, but look at (E) to see whether a stricter parallelism holds.
Quote:
E) about 3.2 million star transits were observed by it and about 3500 exoplanet candidates were identified.
→ Bingo. Both verbs are in passive voice.
Compare to (D). Although option D is not ungrammatical, it is a bit awkward, does not exhibit parallelism, and does not test active vs. passive voice, an issue that seems to be central to this question.
→ In the second verb phrase, the "by it" does not need to be repeated. The phrase is implied.
Eliminate D.
KEEP E
The best answer is E.NOTESI doubt that GMAC would put you in the position of having to choose between options D and E.
I did so to force you to play your "strategy" hand; to force you to ask yourselves,
what is this question writer testing?
If we look at options A, B, C, and E, the answer to that question is clear—the question tests impermissible voice switching.
Try to start thinking about what the question writer is after.
COMMENTSharshtandel838 , welcome to SC Butler (again).
These answers range from very good to excellent.
Nicely done.
