Advanced market research for the MegaTek Corporation predicts that launching a MegaTek Superstore in a given city would only succeed should the density of repeat customers have been greater than 200 per square mile.

A) would only succeed should the density of repeat customers have been greater than
'have been ' isn't required , further would usage makes the sentence murkier therefore out

B) will succeed only should the density of repeat customers be more numerous than
'numerous' isn't required when greater than can be used to deliver the right meaning in addition 'only should ' construction is akward therefore out

C) will succeed only if the density of repeat customers is greater than
THe meaning along with the tense is perfect therefore let us hang on to it

D) should only succeed with a repeat customer density of greater than
'should' usage is absolutely unencessary ,distorting the meaning therefore out

E) will succeed only with repeat customer density being greater than
being is a huge red flag as always the meaning is distorted due to the same therefore out

Therefore IMO C

Hi all! I finished this in 0:33 and this is my first time submitting an Official Answer, so please someone correct me if it is wrong.

A) would only succeed should the density of repeat customers have been greater than

The first fundamental is knowing where “only” should be placed. "Only" needs to be placed after the verb "succeed" and this often trips people up, but see the example below as to how only is used.

Ex: “I only eat strawberries” - the placement of only before strawberries implies I do nothing else (I don’t breathe, sleep, bathe, or any other human function) EXCEPT eat strawberries. That’s not the meaning we want.

“I eat only strawberries” - the placement here is after the verb “eat” implying that the only thing I eat is strawberries, but I still do other activities (sleep, walk, bathe, etc.) This is the correct way to use only.

From this we can eliminate answers A & D.

B) will succeed only should the density of repeat customers be more numerous than

The placement of only after the verb "succeed" is correct, but the next fundamental is recognizing that “will/if” is the correct pairing and that “will/should” is always incorrect. In this case, the original sentence intends that the outcome WILL happen with certainty provided that the density of repeat customers is greater than 200 miles. “If” is the correct conditional to maintain this certainty.

We can get rid of B.

C) will succeed only if the density of repeat customers is greater than

Placement of “only” after the verb "succeed" is correct, and "density of repeat customers" correctly indicates the density of WHAT will lead to success of the launch.

D) should only succeed with a repeat customer density of greater than

Same issue of “only” placement as A. Alternative elimination is the term “repeat customer density”. This implies the individual repeat customer’s density is greater than 200 per square mile and is the wrong meaning.

E) will succeed only with repeat customer density being greater than

Some may pick this answer, but here it’s important to recognize that E does not have “if” and instead has “will succeed only WITH”. This version distorts the meaning and implies that success can happen only when repeat customer density works WITH (alongside) the launch. This doesn’t make sense at all. We are trying to say the success of the launch is dependent on repeat customers.

Also has the same issue as D in “repeat customer density

So we are left with C.

I hope that helps!
