Duration of the flight = \(\frac{600}{X}\) = \(\frac{600}{600}\) = 1 hour

It's a bit hard to tell from the wording of the question what it's asking for, but I'd imagine the question is asking for the duration of the actual flight, accounting for the bad weather and the reduced speed, so as I read it, I think the answer is probably meant to be 1.5 hours.
Hi, yes, I agree. When I read, I thought it was asking for the duration at normal speed. Let's wait for the OA.
Cheers! :)

You asked for the duration of the journey, which includes the extended time for the bad weather too. so, IMO, the answer needs to be 1.5 hours.

In a flight of 600 miles, an aircraft was slowed down due to bad weather. As a result, the average speed for the trip reduced by 200 miles/hr and the time of flight increased by 30 minutes. The duration of the flight is:

A. 1 hour
B. 1.5 hours
C. 2 hours
D. 3 hours
E. 4 hours

Are You Up For the Challenge: 700 Level Questions

ANSWER: A

30 minutes=1/2 hour or 0.5hr
AverageSpeed= total distance/ total time
If there is no bad weather, then Average Speed= 600/t (t=time)
For bad weather average speed= 600/(t+0.5)

therefore, (600/t)-600/(t+0.05)=200 (as average speed reduced by 200 miles)
t=1 (ANSWER)

What is the source for this question? I can't imagine the GMAT giving a question worded like this. This is how it should be:

In a flight of 600 miles, an aircraft was slowed down due to bad weather. As a result, the average speed for the trip reduced by 200 miles/hr and the time of flight increased by 30 minutes. The duration of the flight during normal times without bad weather is:

Answer B

Let, speed be s and time be t

Before the delay,
st = 600

After the delay,
(s-200) * (t+0.5) = 600
or, st-200t+0.5s-100 = 600
or, 200t-0.5s+100 = 600-600 [st = 600]
or, 200t - 0.5s + 100 = 0
or, 200t^2 + 100t - 300 = 0 [s = 600/t]
or, 2t^2 + t -3 = 0
or, t= -3/2, 1

So, duration of flight was 1 + 0.5 hours = 1.5 hours
