Hello All,
I am a current MBA student. Like everyone here, I dreamt of top 5 B- schools and I made it. During my journey, I have met many admission consultants and worked with them. I ended up spending 1000s of dollars. I am sure many of us have been there and will be there. For three years, I have worked with admission consultants, but I made it to 7/8 schools when I have written my own essays and have built my own profile. Infact, 14 of my friends and contacts with whom I have worked on their essays and profile have made it to top 15. I would not say that admission consultants did not help, but upto what extent and how to chose one matters.
Through this post I would like to share few points necessary to remember when you choose your consultant.
1.) Choose a consultant who has attended the school you are targeting or any higher ranked school. ( You cannot expect some one who has attended 20th or 30 th ranked business school in UK to help you enter IVY league- trust me on this, I mean why take chances..they have not been there)
2.) Good consultants do come with price. ( I agree with this, you get what you pay for. But remember to sign up few sessions with them else dont take chances, move on if they are reluctant)
3.) Start working with hourly basis or one school ( Yes, it important to do so. Sometimes you may think choosing 5 schools will give you discount, but suggest to choose 1 school or hourly basis, if you like the consultant upgrade and yes ask for discount)
4.) If your scores are around 600-680, hiring a admissions consultant wont get you to top 10. ( Well, we always want to see the brighter side for sure, but it wont.Dont trust the consultants, it wont...especially if you are Indian, but again factors play role to like GPA(school matters), Work profile.
5.) Yes, testimonials are important but consider many factors when you make your decision. ( Try approaching students from schools with similar back ground and ask them to suggest/recommend thats better)
6.) I dont trust a consultant who actually says they are going to write an essay. Great essays are written by YOU ,ONLY YOU. (If you dont have time leave it. dont apply to B school, be happy with your life.)
