Imagine you have two kinds of heavy blocks:

* **Steel** weighs **17**
* **Silver** weighs **10**
* You want the mixture to weigh **13**

We need to figure out how much steel and silver to use.

Think of **13 as being between 10 and 17**:

```text
Silver Mixture Steel
10 ----------- 13 ------------ 17
```

Now find the distances:

* From **13 to 10** = **3**
* From **17 to 13** = **4**

Here is the important trick:

> The amount of each metal is the distance from the **other** metal.

So:

* Steel gets the distance from **13 to silver (10)** → **3**
* Silver gets the distance from **steel (17) to 13** → **4**

Therefore:

```text
Steel : Silver = 3 : 4
```

✅ **Answer: (D) 3 : 4**

### Quick check

If we mix **3 pieces of steel** and **4 pieces of silver**:

```text
3 × 17 = 51
4 × 10 = 40

Total weight = 51 + 40 = 91
Total pieces = 3 + 4 = 7

91 ÷ 7 = 13
```

The mixture weighs **13 times as much as water**, so **3 : 4 is correct**.
