Hello,

I am taking the GMAT next week, and I have some small practical questions.

Sorry if they have been answered recently – please send me the link in that case.

I have heard “prepare your snack” in test-day advice videos. But on the official website, it says that all food and drinks are prohibited in the test center (at mba dot com - taking the exam at a test center, I'm not allowed to post links yet). I get a painfully dry mouth when I’m nervous. Is a small, transparent bottle of water seriously not permitted?

And how exactly does the whiteboard work? Do we need to erase the whole thing occasionally? If so, how often? I like to write a reminder in a corner of formulas and such that I often mix up. Can I do that at the beginning of quant and DI and not erase it during the section? Also, how much does the whiteboard fit? I have seen the size, but if I get a really thick pen, I am not sure it will be enough for a single question when I get a bit messy testing cases.

How close is the gmat sectional mocks score on gmat club to the original exam- for all 3 sections?
The quant is generally spot on with only the scores above 85 being hit miss because that’s just missing one question on the test so those are very unreliable in any test

Verbal is a bit inflated by maybe one or 1.5 points and the data insights is very harsh with about 2 to 3 points of harshness

between all three sections, it ends up equalizing. We are working in correcting some of these imperfections and have a large new adaptive release coming in about a month, and I just gathered that statistic across about 600 test takers who took the real exam and benchmarked the algorithm

Another question- in verbal section I have noticed that I have 8-10 mins left for the last 5-6 questions which normally includes 1 RC. And to complete on time I tend to skip 1 RC by guessing its answers, this has mostly been my trend.
Now I have a question, sometimes I get a difficult RC more early in the test. So my question- is it better to guess that RC which I get earlier on the test and then complete the rest of the test by answering all questions or is it better to make guesses towards the end so that there is not much questions left for adaptation which can effect my marks

I need advice on this because if I get a difficult RC early on and attempt it mostly I get it 50% (say 2 or 3 out of 4 questions) as incorrect only plus it spend a lot of time in that.
Please advice which one is a better strategy in such a scenario
I would say you never want to play a game of trying to outsmart the test. So guessing things at the very end is not going to be helpful unless you know some secrets to the algorithm. I can tell you that everyone runs out of time at the end so it’s not like the test just ignores the mistake you make at the end or closes its eyes to be like OK well she did some hard questions in the beginning so I’ll forgive her the super easy mistakes she made at the end. On this version of the test, A mistake is a mistake.

My suggestion is that you split the test into 315 minutes sections and it can be four sections or two sections, it doesn’t matter but you want to be targeting to be more or less on time within each of those sections so this means you would have to be guessing that hard reading comprehension passage and but I can tell you is that it’s gonna have less of a negative impact on your score if you’re guessing a hard question so you want to D.S. as you move and not defer a bunch of questions to the very end

I was doing good on verbal and not in quants.
And now on hearing that verbal might be inflated I am lil demotivated.
So a quick question- is it the markings that differ or the way the test adapts is not how it happens in real exam.
Knowing this would help me certainly
It is an extremely complicated way than the official test adapts. There are probably about 10.5 or people in the world who understand the mechanics and the complexity behind it and could make use of some of that information. I am a half and that’s 10.5.

What I can tell you is that because of so many variables and probabilities that are activated during the official test, sometimes you may not even find a linear connection between difficulty of questions you’re getting and your answers. For example, the official algorithm makes sure that all questions are used proportionately and it ensures that only certain types are used and then it ensures that it takes a higher quality question versus a lower quality question and that the question it uses has a lower guessing parameter.

What I would say is there’s no way to outsmart the test. The only way to beat it is by answering questions correctly in a timely manner. Don’t try to solve questions upfront and then fall apart at the end, that doesn’t work and does not help and don’t waste your time on figuring out the algorithm because I’ve been doing this for many years and while I know a lot of of the details, the actual randomness component is completely unpredictable and there is a lot of randomness in determining what question you get next so to make it very unsatisfying but very simple at the same time, don’t look for shortcuts. Address your weaknesses be strict with your time and guess if you don’t know.

At the same time, I know a lot of people are different than they want to see their best approach and best way even if it’s only psychological so what I would suggest to you is try different scenarios and see if a certain scenario helps you consistently get a higher score because just like the test has a lot of randomness so do people have different strengths and different confidence boosters but while this can help you leverage your own strength, you won’t find the weakness in the test

For your first question wrt the snacks/ water bottle, they usually allow you to carry water bottle and/or snacks to the test center but it needs to be kept in the lockers right outside your test room. In the 10 mins break that you get, you can go out and have it. Water is not allowed to be carried inside the room tho so you can only have it during your break.

If you are giving the test at a center then you will be given a writing pad. You do not need to erase it. One page is usually more than enough for a single question. Please check the number of pages before you start and manage space accordingly if you are someone who takes up a lot of writing space while solving. Although, you can request for an additional writing pad, it might take some time off your test. Whether you can write the formulae at the start of quant of DI- I am not sure. I think the rules mention that you cannot write anything before the start of the test. But once it does, you are free to write them down, sure

Hi eiuseum,

As Theeldertwin mentioned, allowed, but not in the testing room (you can access your snack/drinks during the break).

1. Here's the GMAC policy for test-centre appointments:
Quote:
Items, including food, drink, gum, candy, and lip balm are not allowed in the testing room unless expressly pre-authorized for a disability. You may store food, drink, and lip balm in a locker (if available for your use at the test center) and use them during the breaks.

Here's the GMAC policy for GMAT online appointments:
Quote:
Items, including food, drink (other than water in a clear container with no labels), gum, and candy, are not allowed in the testing area unless expressly pre-authorized for a disability.
Quote:
You may have ONLY your identification, testing workstation, one physical erasable whiteboard, up to two (2) dry erase markers, one dry erase whiteboard eraser, water in a clear container, eyeglasses, without the case, and permitted comfort items within arm’s reach after you check in to your exam.

2. The (test taker's) whiteboard is only for online GMAT appointments, not for test-centre appointments.

Thank you for the answers!

The "What You CAN’T Bring to the Test Center:
Food, drink, and candy are not allowed unless expressly pre-authorized as an accommodation"
sounded a bit harsh.

Thanks, every video was talking about whiteboards.
So we get real pen and paper? That's great!

The paper is sort of a laminated paper. You get a marker to write on it. Remember to ask for 2 markers at the start in case one dries up. You can always ask another additional one later

Also about not being allowed to carry food or drink or candy... 🤔... Are you sure it is mentioned as not allowed at the test center or test room? As far as I can see you can bring food that you can have during a break. I had also carried it during my exam

Hi guys, hope you’re all doing well! I wanted to ask: after finishing the exam, do we receive the unofficial score immediately? And is it possible to send that unofficial score to universities right after the exam at a test center?

The unofficial score is available immediately but no, you cannot send it till you receive the official score report
