Hello Everyone,
I recently gave the GMAT and scored a 730. Wasn’t sure if I even had anything of value to share with the community since the forum is full of experts and really inspiring debriefs from other high scoring members. But was asked by
bb to give it a shot, so here goes nothing.
Setting the stageI started my prep with an Indian firm in march 2022, for the sole reason that they were providing online live classes. Somehow, I reasoned that the availability of online classes was the paramount factor in choosing a course and didn’t bother to research about other prep companies/private tutors.(bad move)
I finished the whole course with them over the next 4-5 months and gave the official mocks scoring 700 on Official Mock 1(June 2022) and 710 on Official Mock 2(July 2022). The prep still felt lacking in something and the support from the prep company was subpar, hence I got in touch with two of the best tutors for verbal and quant. My sessions with them really opened my eyes to how blissfully unaware I was of the gaps in my prep. I did some quant sessions and sc+cr sessions which ofc helped me but imposter syndrome(this will be a recurring theme) stopped me from booking a date even after I had scored upwards of 700 in Official Mock 5/6.
But at the insistence of my parents, I booked the first available date which was 25th October 2022, the day right after Diwali(very bad move). Because of noise and exhaustion from the 5 hr travel, I barely had a wink of sleep and ofc, screwed up my gmat scoring a 640(q44, v33). Instead of labelling this as a one off bad day, I very stupidly let my imposter syndrome make me believe that my abilities and my prep were the problem and not the lack of sleep.( I was practically sleeping on my exam chair)
I went back to my tutors and restarted the prep, hoping for a better outcome this time. Making no major changes to my prep, I gave more mocks(
MGMAT+ official) and scored decently on both( 700+ on the official ones and around 670ish on the
mgmat ones). I booked my gmat again but this time an online one for December 6th 2022. The quant section went fine but during Verbal which is my strong suit, a street vendor started selling his wares outside my house and almost as if by schedule, a loudspeaker came to life and there went my concentration out the door. I lost my footing for a good ten minutes and screwed the up the CR and RC questions that came up during that time. Surely, the score reflected this. It was 690(q48, v36, ir7, awa6). Again instead of quickly booking another date, I sat in a pool of self doubt.
By January 2023, I’d decided to write the GMAT again for a third time. But thanks to a personal problem at home which ate two months of mine, I really only started with my prep from end of March’23. This was the most difficult leg of my prep as now I was completely on my own(no tutors, no other help). But GMATCLUB came to my rescue and I used it to revisit previously incorrectly solved questions.
This time, I did not write many mocks as I was completely out of energy and motivation. For quant, I only used
GMAT club tests(they’re exceptional) and for verbal, I used the focus mocks. I wrote the two focus mocks scoring above the 90th percentile in one and 99th percentile in another. Both these scores and the approaching deadlines pushed me to quickly book the date for August.
GMAT#3 Test dayThis time I traveled two days before the exam day and had decent sleep before the exam day. I struggled on some questions on quant but felt it went good. Verbal however decimated my confidence. I remember right from the start that SC felt ridiculously difficult and RC was getting progressively worse. The exhaustion from Verbal did bleed into the IR section in which I did much worse than my previous attempt. However the score of 730(q48, v42, ir5, awa6) really surprised me.
Some Red Flags and Learnings: (Skip the story above and read this if you’re short on time)
General Tips:• Book a date when you’re in the right state of mind and not when somebody/something is standing over your shoulder. Think of when do you perform best, are you are a morning person/not. For me the 8 AM slot was a mistake as it did not leave any room for error in the morning.
• In case you are traveling, pls be realistic about how much rest would you need to be in top shape for the exam.
• In the online exam, pls be cognizant of the fact that distractions can come in at my moment. If like me, you are easily perturbed by noises then take the exam at the testing center.
• Please DO NOT at any point of time look at the state of your prep through the filter of feelings. Numbers dont lie. If you are scoring consistently above 700, remember that not every mock score is a fluke. Likewise, if in every mock you are nowhere near your target score, do not expect an exam day miracle.
Quant:• Over the one year, I had no increase in my quant score on the actual exam. I attribute some of this to test day forces at play but most of it to the fact that I did not strengthen my weak areas, Geometry and Probability.
• Do not neglect your weak areas as no last minute Hail mary play is going to save you in those areas.
Verbal:• In CR, nothing beats very very deep analysis of the options. I have many many times spent upwards of 30 minutes on a CR question I did not get right. Do not be afraid to invest time in the CR questions. I have read no books for CR and I fully attribute my strong CR skills to this method.
• In SC, keeping a track of your common errors and new idioms/concepts found in some questions helps a lot. I used to religiously revise from my notebook. Similar to what I did in CR, I looked very deeply at the meaning differences in the different options in SC.
• For RC, unfortunately I don’t think I am the right person to give advice as this is my strong suit.
This journey has been quite long and difficult. Hence I would ask all my fellow test takers to have a little more faith in themselves when going through the prep(I know its easier said than done). A huge thankyou to some friends and mentors I found here on gmatclub. Also,Thankyou to all the tutors(
GMATNinja and
KarishmaB ) on GMATClub who write such long explanations for the questions on the forum. Thankyou
bb for this wonderful platform.
