GMAT is a combination of accuracy and speed. It’s also a trade-off. You can trade off accuracy for speed or speed for accuracy.

I would recommend to be careful about jettisoning a particular strategy just because it requires extra time. Obviously those highly paid gmat tutors and instructors didn’t just come up with some stupid mindless task for you to do. However there’s a reason for it. It’s not like they haven’t thought that taking Henderson notes requires time. they’re not idiots 😂

I took brief notes. I wrote them down on my scratch paper. I paused after every paragraph, summarized it in my mind, and wrote some brief notes. Perhaps a line (I can’t remember) perhaps three or four words it was fairly brief but meaningful at the same time, capturing the main concept or the main idea of the paragraph. I would also write some interesting points down as I was reading through a particularly dense paragraph. You will have to figure out what works for you and what you can afford with the time that you have. You want to do this well ahead of your exam.

I never went back to read the notes. They’re not there for you to read them later either. They have a completely different purpose the purpose is to slow you down because my little brain would get overwhelmed reading three paragraphs without a break and without a chance to absorb it. Taking pauses to write down and summarize the concepts give me the right pace and ability to answer questions a lot faster without having to go back to the passage. I also understood the passage a lot better. Using this technique I was able to go for about 50 to 60% accuracy all the way to 80 to 90% accuracy. It took 20 minutes to follow this strategy and my accuracy immediately shot up to the very high level.

In my experience, this was the most transformational moment in my GMAT learning. Nothing was as helpful as this strategy and nothing was as easy to implement. The challenger of course is the time that you get. There’s very little time so you will have to figure out how to incorporate the strategy into your overall verbal Timing pace. I had to be very nimble on the critical reasoning and sentence correction and save as much time as I could for my reading comprehension… got V42 🤷‍♂️

Hey bb,

That's very insightful, and I'll try to take notes to assimilate my understanding of the passages now too. It makes sense to do so as I often skim through the passage first and then go back to the passage as the questions comes. Costs me an average of 20 extra seconds anyway so I'm gonna give this a shot. Thanks!

I love reading comprehension so wanted to jump in and share some quick thoughts. I find taking notes a strict no-no because
1. They take my eyes away from the most imp thing which is the screen(and the passage)
2. If you dont follow/understand the passage, making notes is not the equivalent of a magic pill that will suddenly make the passage easier for one to understand.
3. The passages are never long enough for somebody to actually realize any kind of value from this note making.

What works for me is
1.reading/ re-reading the passage and making mental summaries. I never shy away from spending extra time if needed on any RC paragraph.
2. I always try to have a main point from each para. If the passage is too difficult, I just remember what I think is important and then try to work backwards from the questions.

I can see my approach is a complete 180 to bb 's approach, so sorry if my post doesnt help you a lot.

Hey sv2023,

This is actually what I do as well. I skim through the passage first and then re-read the passage as and when required. Based on yours and bb's advice, I think I can try practicing with very short - meaningful words / notes for a day or two and see how it works for me. I really appreciate the effort you've put in to explain your thought process as it makes a lot of sense.

Thanks!!!!! :D
