The Ramos family of 4 is estimating the cost of a planned trip that includes 4 round-trip airline tickets (each consisting of 2 nonstop flights—one to their destination and the other back home) and 1 hotel room for the 6 days/nights at their destination.

They plan to take a total of 3 suitcases on each of the nonstop flights, and each suitcase will be checked as a separate baggage item for each nonstop flight. If they take their own child safety seats, then each seat will be checked as a separate baggage item, and they will check a total of 5 baggage items on each flight.

While at their destination, they can use public transportation, which they estimate will cost a total of $200, or they can rent a car. If they rent a car for the 6 days, they will be charged a total of $150 for parking at the hotel in addition to paying the daily rental fee for the car for each of the 6 days. Also, if and only if they rent a car, the 2 children will each need to be buckled into an appropriate child safety seat, which the Ramos family can take with them or rent for a separate fee where they rent the car. They are not including any estimated gasoline costs in their planning.The table shows round-trip ticket costs and baggage fees for the 5 airlines being considered by the Ramos family.

In accordance with the Ramos family's plans for their trip, if they use Airline A3 and rent a car from Company C4, how much less would their estimated costs be if they take their own child safety seats for their children rather than renting the seats from Company C4 ?

Airline A3 charges $30 per checked item per flight. Taking 2 child safety seats means 2 extra items each way, so 4 total. Extra baggage cost = 4 * $30 = $120.

Company C4 charges $13 per seat per day, 2 seats for 6 days = $13 * 2 * 6 = $156.

The difference is $156 - $120 = $36.

For each of the following car rental companies, select Yes if the child safety seat rental fee is a greater percentage of the car rental fee than for Company C1. Otherwise, select No.

For C1, the child safety seat fee is 10 and the car fee is 30, so the ratio is one third. To compare other companies, take the seat fee and ask: if the ratio were exactly one third, the implied car fee would be three times the seat fee. Then compare the implied car fee to the actual car fee. If actual is smaller, the ratio is greater than one third; if actual is larger, the ratio is less than one third.

• Company C2

Seat fee 12 implies car 36 at one third. Actual car is 27, which is smaller, so the ratio is greater than one third. So the answer is Yes.

• Company C3

Seat fee 9 implies car 27 at one third. Actual car is 32, which is larger, so the ratio is less than one third. So the answer is No.

• Company C4

Seat fee 13 implies car 39 at one third. Actual car is 35, which is smaller, so the ratio is greater than one third. So the answer is Yes.

In accordance with the Ramos family's plans for their trip, for each of the following airlines, select Yes if the total of their round-trip ticket costs and baggage fees is greater than $1,800. Otherwise, select No.

The total cost equals the ticket cost for 4 passengers plus baggage fees for 3 checked items per flight (or less if some of those are free), since they are not taking their own child safety seats.

• A3: ticket 398 * 4 is just under 1,600; baggage 3 * 30 * 2 = 180; total is under 1,780, which is less than 1,800.

Answer: No.

• A4: ticket 475 * 4 = 1,900, already more than 1,800, so there is no need to calculate baggage.

Answer: Yes.

• A5: ticket 405 * 4 = 1,620; baggage 2 * 25 * 2 = 100 (first free, so only 2 charged per flight); total = 1,720, which is less than 1,800.

Answer: No.

I had a different question on this MSR. Could someone please help? I cannot seem to find the right answer even though I tried many times.

Assume the Ramos family plans to use Airline A5. According to the information provided, if they rent only a car from the company with the lowest daily rate, then their estimated costs would be, at a minimum, how much more than their estimated costs if they use public transportation?

Total costs with rental: 27*6+150+25*2=362$
Total costs with public transportation: 200$
Difference: 161$
But answer is 212$.

You are wrong in the colored portion.

It is a round trip, so the cost on the trip back would also be included. => 25*2 is one way cost for two child seats.

Answer:-
Total costs with rental: 27*6+150+25* 2*2 =412$
Total costs with public transportation: 200$
Difference: 412 - 200 = 212$

Hi  Bunuel , the question asks us to find whether the total of the round-trip ticket costs and baggage fees is greater than $1800. At first glance, I calculated the cost of the total trip - to the destination and back home. Naturally, all 3 of my costs are coming out to be greater than $1800. Could you tell me why taking the cost of two trips - to the destination and back home - would be incorrect?

The ticket price already includes both directions (round trip). Only the baggage fee is per nonstop flight, so baggage gets counted twice, but the ticket cost does not.
