Lets make two formulas
E1. S+L=14
E2. S=2/3L-----L=3/2S (flipped the formula around since we are plugging this in to solve for S)
Now plug in S+3/2S=14
5S=28
S=5.6
Answer is 5.6

We can create two equations from the given information..
A piece of tape 14 inches long was cut into two pieces. =>
Let the smaller one be s and larger l, so \(s+l = 14\)...(i)
The length of the shorter piece was \(\frac{2}{3}\) the length of the longer piece. =>
So, \(s = \frac{2}{3} l..........l=\frac{3}{2} s\)....(ii)
Substituting the value of l from (ii) in (i) = > \(s+\frac{3}{2}s=14......\frac{5}{2 }s=14.......s=14*\frac{2}{5}=2.8*2 = 5.6\)
