Hi All,
I recently took the GMAT Focus edition and scored a 755. I had only used free Official GMAT Prep, GMAT Club forum practice questions, and GMATNinja for my preparation.
Preparation:I started my prep a couple of months back, right after the CAT exam that is held for admission to MBA colleges in India. I already had some basic idea about the syllabus and pattern of the GMAT Exam, so I dived directly into practice and mocks.
In order to address concepts I was weak in, I relied on videos by GMATNinja. The approach taught by GMATNinja for every section really helped me in overcoming my shortcomings. I used the GMAT Club forum mainly to practice questions and time myself. As I was working full time during my prep, I had to manage my time, and on most days I was able to study for a good 2-2.5 hours. My approach was to work on two sections each day, practicing questions and gradually increasing the difficulty of the questions with time until I was able to solve 90% of the 705+ difficulty level questions correctly in each section. I faced the maximum difficulty in the verbal section, particularly the CR part of the verbal section. There were days I would get most of the practice questions wrong, but I worked on understanding the basic concepts and paced myself through the prep. I took breaks whenever things went too wrong and was generally able to come back to the prep with better performance.
Mocks:I took the free mock tests available on GMAT Club, eGMAT,
Experts Global, and the Free Official Prep. The following was my progression in the mocks:
GMAT Club: 695
1st Official Mock: 695
eGMAT: 705
2nd Official Mock: 715
Experts Global: 735
I maintained a note of my time in each section and my mistakes in each section, especially those that could be avoided. I had to work specifically on completing my data insights section on time, as I would usually get stuck on a question and lose a lot of time there, and on avoiding silly mistakes in quant. For verbal, I relied on consistent practice and a little time management.
Actual Test:My test was scheduled the day after I scored a 735 on the mock. I started with the Data Insights section, followed by Quant. I took the break after quant to refuel, freshen up, and sit for the verbal section with a clear mind, as it was my weakest section. Luckily, I was able to score 755 with 88Q, 88V, and 86DI.
I was somewhat sceptical about my attempt and was prepared for a retest with more thorough preparation if needed, but luckily, I was able to get my target score in my first attempt itself.
Really grateful to this forum for providing so many resources and resolving so many of my doubts. Looking forward to my application and admission journey ahead.
Thanks
