GPS, the Global Positioning System (GPS) is a global navigation satellite system and is often used for navigating by car. Traveler's Best Friend (TBF) is a new navigation aids company which believes that not only drivers but also hikers could use GPS for navigating and have therefore decided to develop a GPS device for hikers.

Which of the following, if true, most seriously strengthens TBF's conclusion?

A. Technical problems prevent the entry of old mine fields data into the GPS device program.

B. A survey conducted by TBF shows that 82% of hikers would buy GPS hardware and software if the price is manageable.

C. Due to high developing prices, the price for the end purchaser is estimated at $15,000, far more expensive than any other single hiking accessory.

D. A rival company, TBP (traveler's best pal) has tried to develop the device, but were forced to halt the development due to technological limitations.

E. The estimated weight of the GPS system is roughly 40 pounds.

GPS is a global navigation satellite system used for car navigation. TBF a car aid company is planning to devel gps device for hikers. As it might be beneficial for both car navigation and hikers.

Which option strengthens the conclusion ?

Option B - mentions a survey data supporting that 82% of hikers would buy GPS hardware and software if the price is reasonable.

A. Technical problems prevent the entry of old mine fields data into the GPS device program.

This does not mention anything about hiker demand, but mentions about technical problems only. Out of scope.

B. A survey conducted by TBF shows that 82% of hikers would buy GPS hardware and software if the price is manageable.

This is the correct answer. This statement directly supports TBF’s conclusion by showing a positive demand for a GPS product among hikers.

C. Due to high developing prices, the price for the end purchaser is estimated at $15,000, far more expensive than any other single hiking accessory.

This weakens the conclusion, mentioning the price of gps device for hikers much more greater than other accessory. Eliminated.

D. A rival company, TBP (traveler's best pal) has tried to develop the device, but were forced to halt the development due to technological limitations.

This is irrelevant option.

E. The estimated weight of the GPS system is roughly 40 pounds.

if the new device is about 40 pounds, it would be harder for hikers to carry it. Hence it weakens the conclusion.

The passage explains why TBF will make GPS for hikers and question wants to select option which supports the conclusion. Lets analyze the statements:

A. Technical problems prevent the entry of old mine fields data into the GPS device program.
Irrelevant option. Eliminate
B. A survey conducted by TBF shows that 82% of hikers would buy GPS hardware and software if the price is manageable.
The survey shows that GPS device is needed by hikers and therefore one should develop GPS for hikers. This should be answer. Lets analyze other options
C. Due to high developing prices, the price for the end purchaser is estimated at $15,000, far more expensive than any other single hiking accessory.
Weaken the conclusion. Eliminate
D. A rival company, TBP (traveler's best pal) has tried to develop the device, but were forced to halt the development due to technological limitations.
Irrelevant. Eliminate
E. The estimated weight of the GPS system is roughly 40 pounds.
In a way weaken conclusion as hikers are already carrying weight. Eliminate

Correct answer is B.

OFFICIAL EXPLANATION

GPS, the Global Positioning System (GPS) is a global navigation satellite system and is often used for navigating by car. Traveler's Best Friend (TBF) is a new navigation aids company which believes that not only drivers but also hikers could use GPS for navigating and have therefore decided to develop a GPS device for hikers.

Which of the following, if true, most seriously strengthens TBF's conclusion?

A. Technical problems prevent the entry of old mine fields data into the GPS device program.

Incorrect.

To solve this Conclusion Strengthening question, first break down the argument. The first sentences is a premise which provides factual data; the second sentence presents TBF and includes both TBF's assumption and its conclusion, which follows the conclusion conjunction (therefore):

Premise A: GPS is used for navigating by car.
+
Premise B: TBF is a software company developing programs using GPS.
+
Assumption: hikers could use a GPS device
=
Conclusion: there is a market for GPS devices for hikers

Strengthening Data: ?

You are required to find data that supports developing a GPS device for hikers. The correct answer could be one that confirms the argument's assumption.

This answer choice weakens TBF's conclusion because pointing out old mine fields could be an important feature for hikers - TBF's future customers (at least in some regions). Remember, you are trying to show that hiker could use the GPS device or that they would buy it.

B. A survey conducted by TBF shows that 82% of hikers would buy GPS hardware and software if the price is manageable.

This answer choice strengthens the conclusion directly, showing that a large market for a GPS device for hikers exists.

C. Due to high developing prices, the price for the end purchaser is estimated at $15,000, far more expensive than any other single hiking accessory.

Incorrect.

To solve this Conclusion Strengthening question, first break down the argument. The first sentences is a premise which provides factual data; the second sentence presents TBF and includes both TBF's assumption and its conclusion, which follows the conclusion conjunction (therefore):

This answer choice weakens TBF's conclusion because an expensive product may sell less, especially if it competes with other hiking accessories.

D. A rival company, TBP (traveler's best pal) has tried to develop the device, but were forced to halt the development due to technological limitations.

Incorrect.

Similar case, bad result? This is a classic conclusion weakener. The fact someone else tried to develop the software and failed does not mean TBF will fail, but it does not support the decision to try develop it.

E. The estimated weight of the GPS system is roughly 40 pounds.

Incorrect.

This answer choice weakens the conclusion: the GPS device's weight could be unsuitable for hiking.
