Hello everybody,
I am looking for some feedback on my profile as I work towards my MBA applications:
Bachelors:
- US, Engineering, Reputed tech college
- GPA 3.23/4.0
- Majority of the semesters GPA >3.6. However, some of the semesters were not so great and GPA is between 3 - 3.3.
Work Experience (8.5 years till date):
- Industry leading, Fortune 100 companies
- Current industry: Manufacturing
- Current role within global product management, manage $X00M+ product portfolio, strong cross-regional leadership in a matrix organization
- Career progression: 3+ promotions in the last 8 years (engineering to product marketing and now, strategy & product management)
- Regular engagement and work with executive leadership (including C-suite)
- 2 global leadership programs (one with previous employer, one with current)
- Various corporate awards (internal)
International Experience:
- Lived in multiple geographies India/US/Middle East
- Rescue scuba diver, outdoor/hiking enthusiast
- Extensive traveler
- Highly international and culturally adaptable
GMAT (FE): Not so great and I am struggling with this.
- Attempt 1: 565, Q80 / V81 / DI7
- Mocks prior to attempt 1 range between 595-635
- Retake in Dec
MBA Goals:
- Short Term: Pivot to consulting
Target Schools: M7, T15, could look at Europe. However, I do understand that the GMAT score will be a challenge.
Appreciate the feedback!
Thanks for sharing your profile,
kxb3805. Let's start with your strengths: 3+ promotions, movement into global product strategy, and P&L. Consulting schools like this. Large portfolio, cross-regional work, C-suite visibility, leadership programs. International profile, actually lived in 3 regions (not just “travels a lot”), fits global consulting + European schools very well. Age 32 with 8–9 YOE by matriculation is great for consulting-oriented MBAs.
Concerns: The current GMAT FE score of 565 is far below the target bands. For M7/T15, you typically want a GMAT FE score in the ~675, 685+ range as an Indian male. Your mocks 595–635 suggest you can climb, but you’ll need a significant jump. You've got this! Prepare well, and if you'd like, you can explore TTP. All the very best for your GMAT.
GPA 3.23 is okay, but not compensate for a low GMAT. You can read these blogs on
How to Justify a Low GPA in Your MBA Application and
Navigating Low GMAT/GPA Scores in MBA Applications. The “strong-term” pattern (>3.6 in some semesters) can help if you explain the dip and highlight rigour, but only with a great test score.
If the score is below ~665 FE score, M7 will be extremely unlikely, and T15 will be tough.
So, for your December retake, prepare well and invest time in fixing your score first. Clarify the consulting goal, be specific: MBB vs Tier-2, geo (US vs EU vs Middle East), and practice (ops, product/innovation, industrials, etc.). Your background screams industrial/manufacturing/product strategy consulting, lean into that. Turn your career into 3–4 killer stories. One each for: Product/P&L ownership – tradeoffs & impact, leading across regions – handling conflict/complexity, driving change – like digital transformation or a new strategy, and personal/international growth – linking your moves across India/US/Middle East.
Questions for you to reflect upon:
1) Which consulting firms/geos are top of mind (like MBB in the US, or open to Europe / Middle East)?
2) Are you open to Europe (INSEAD/LBS/HEC/IESE), or is your priority US-only?
We would love to learn more about your academic background, extracurricular activities, professional experiences, and personal journey so we can offer a more tailored assessment of your profile and evaluate your chances at your target schools more accurately.
