At a recent trade show, a survey was conducted on coffee brands. Each brand was categorized based on whether it increased its wholesale price per pound this year compared to last year. What percentage of the brands surveyed increased their wholesale price this year?

(1) Of the brands that increased their price, 25% increased it by at least $2 per pound.

(2) Of all the brands surveyed, 15% increased their price by at least $2 per pound.

Here, we need to calculate percentage of brands who increased their prices this year.

Statement 1: It tells only about that 25% of increased brands have increased by $2.

Not Sufficient.

Statement 2: It only tells about that out of all 15% brands increased their price by $2, but there could be brands who have increased there price but by different amount.

Not Sufficient.

1+2: When combining 1 and 2 we can see that,

Increased % * 0.25 = 15

Therefore, Increased % = 15/0.25 = 60%

Hence, it is sufficient.

Therefore, Option D is correct.

AD ---> Let's X brand increased their price. Brands that increased their price at least by $2 per pound = 0.25x. No details about all surveyed brands in relation to brands that increased price ---> Insufficient

B ---> Let's Y represent the all brands surveyed. Brands that increased their price at least $2 per pound = 0.15y, Details missing about the brands that increased price less than $2 per pound ---> Insufficient.

C---> Upon combining we can compare brands that increased their price by at least $2 per pound ---> 0.25x=0.15y --C Answer

Let the number of brands having increased their price be x and the brands which did not increase be y.

Statement 1 => Brands that increased their price by at least 2 pounds = 25% of the brands that increased their price => 0.25x => Not sufficient
Statement 2 => Brands that increased their price by at least 2 pounds = 15% of all the brands surveyed = 0.15 (x+y) => Not sufficient

Statement 1+2 together => o.25x = 0.15 (x+y) => 5x = 3x+3y => 2x = 3y => x/y = 3/2 => x/(x+y) = 3/5
=> price increase / total = 3/5 => 60%

Hence both statements together are sufficient. Correct Answer => C

From what we know,
Let,
Total number of brands surveyed = T
Total number of brands that increased their wholesale price = I
Total number of brands that increased their price by atleast $2 = B

We need to find (I/T)*100%

Statement (1),
Of the brands that increased the price, 25% increased by atleast $2
=> B = 0.25 I

But we dont know T so we cant determine I/T
So, statement 1 is insufficient

Statement(2),
Of all the brands surveyed, 15% increased their price by atleast $2
=> B = 0.15T

But we dont know how many brands increased their price
So statement 2 is insufficient

Combining (1) and (2),
B = 0.25I
B = 0.15T
=> I/T = 0.15/0.25 = 0.6
=> 60% of the brands increased their wholesale price

C. Both statements are sufficient, but neither alone is sufficient

A - Of the brands that increase their price, 25% increased by at least $2 per pound
This statement is alone not sufficient since we do not know that in total how many brands increased their price.

B - Of all the brands surveyed, 15% increased their price by at least $2 per pound.
This statement does not help in identifying the total number of brands. So alone it is not sufficient.

Combining both the statements, 15% of total = 25% of the brands that increased their price
Multiply each side by 4,
60% of total = 100% of the brands that increased the price. Hence, 60% increased the price.

Both the statements together are sufficient.

To find percentage of brands increased their wholesale price
lets say x%
statement 1=
only mentioned about a part of the brands
talks about a subset that increased prices
Not Sufficient since this alone cannot tell is p
statement 2=
again this is the opposite,
gives half the information. so, not sufficient
Combining both statements
25% of the price increasing brands equals 15% of all
so,
total price increasing brand = 15%/0.25= 60%
Option c

i just have a questionn regarding this problem.

The question provides :
(1) Of the brands that increased their price, 25% increased it by at least $2 per pound.

(2) Of all the brands surveyed, 15% increased their price by at least $2 per pound

Where does it provide the details where it shows the company that increased it's prices in comparison but only for example 1$ ???
Why are we considering 2$ as the min increase to be considered. Why wont the answer be E?

You have asked the right question, though via statement 1 'Of the brands that increased their price' -- this includes all those who increased the price of which 25% were those who increase at least $2 per pound
and with statement 2: of all total 15% are were those who increase at least $2 per pound.
those who increase at least $2 per pound is common b/w statement 1 and 2 hence can make equation 25% of brands that increased their price(what we need to find out) = 15% of surveyed brands.

A) only gives information about certain brands that increased their price, insufficient

B) gives info on brands that increased their price by atleast $2, insufficient

Combined - A + B i.e., C --
since both statements are talking about brands that increased their price by atleast $2, we can conclude
- 15/100 (Total) = 25/100 (Those brands that increased price)
therefore, 3/5 (total) = those brands that increased price
This can be converted to % -- 3/5 * 100 = 60%

Answer C
