Let's break this down step by step.

Step 1: Set up variables.
Let m = employees on maternity leave.
Then:
- Sick leave = 4m (four times maternity)
- Educational leave = m + 5 (five more than maternity)

Step 2: Find m.
All three types add up to 149:
m + 4m + (m + 5) = 149
6m + 5 = 149
6m = 144
m = 24

So:
- Maternity leave: 24
- Sick leave: 4 × 24 = 96
- Educational leave: 24 + 5 = 29

Quick check: 24 + 96 + 29 = 149

Step 3: Figure out how many return to work.
- Half of maternity leave return: 24 ÷ 2 = 12 return
- One third of sick leave return: 96 ÷ 3 = 32 return
- Educational leave: nobody returns (not mentioned)

Total returning = 12 + 32 = 44

Step 4: Employees still on leave.
149 - 44 = 105

Answer: C

The most common mistake here is misreading "half return" as "half remain" or mixing up which fraction applies to which group. Always re-read the question to confirm what's returning vs. what's remaining.
