Booth's New MBA Essays Are Shorter. Not Easier.

Question

Booth just released its new MBA application, and the essays are finally out.

The big surprise is not a new 500-word prompt or some wild curveball question. It is the opposite. Booth has gone for extremely short responses. Here are the new essay/short answer instructions:

All candidates are required to submit responses to the following four prompts (300 character limit per response):

What is your immediate post-MBA career goal?
What is your long-term post-MBA career goal?
Upload an image and explain its significance to you.
Share a fun fact or something unique about yourself.

That 300-character limit changes everything. These responses don’t really feel like essays. They feel like tiny admissions haikus with career consequences. I’m exaggerating a bit, obviously, but only a bit. At this length, there is no room for a warm-up, no room to provide context, and no room for polished MBA language that sounds nice but does not actually say much. Every word has to earn its place.
That is why I think this application may actually be harder than it looks.

The first two answers need to handle goals, readiness, and a little why Booth. Not a full “Why Booth” essay, because there simply is not space for that, but just a touch to show that your career path makes sense, your next step is credible, and Booth fits into the plan in a real way.

Then I’d treat the image response and fun fact as a pair. I think a lot of people will make a big mistake in this app and use these two responses to reveal something cute or they think is memorable, but is ultimately not useful or insightful. And useful and insightful is the goal. So, instead, one of these essays (either the image or the fun fact) should reveal passion (i.e. values, character, mission, or something deeper about what drives you) and the other would then need to focus on a core transferable skill, revealing your unique internal operating style that fits Booth (i.e. leadership supported by curiosity, initiative, risk tolerance, comfort with ambiguity, or the willingness to dive into a messy problem with other people and help move it forward).

In roughly 200 to 230 total words across the full set, applicants will need to show direction, readiness, personality, values, and fit. That's a lot in such a limited space. To get it right will require real strategy. Each answer needs to do one specific job, but the whole set still has to add up to one coherent Booth story.

Whats the rationale behind such a move? How do I provide context and background into my short term and long term goals, demonstrating transferrable skillsets?

Great question. My read is that there are a few things going on with Booth.

First, the 300-character responses force applicants to prioritize. Longer essays give people more room to explain themselves, but they also give people more room to wander, over-polish, and hide behind generic MBA-speak. With this format, there's just no space to hide.

Second, based on what we are all seeing in admissions right now, I would not be surprised if this is partly a response to AI-generated essay slop. A 300-character answer does not eliminate AI, obviously, but it does force sharper choices. And those choices reveal a lot.

Finally, the more interesting piece to me is actually buried at the end of the interview instructions. Booth now says invited applicants will also complete a brief "virtual interactive exercise" that complements the interview and gives another perspective on their candidacy. I feel like this is a key piece of the application.

I believe this exercise was added to elicit deeper and more authentic insights into how an applicant thinks. In a live setting, an applicant's judgment, clarity, communication, and ability to handle pressure will all be on display, revealing how someone responds when they cannot spend three weeks polishing 300 words into submission. That is much harder for AI to fake.

In other words, the short answers may be less about telling the full story and more about setting the table. Booth can then use the interview and interactive exercise to probe whether the story holds up when the applicant has to think and communicate in real time.
