Hi ashishkalita,

Not a criminal expert and not able to distinguish theft from robbery so thank you for pointing it out. I will change the word.
In defense of the question - D) does not say that the pickpockets commit robbery actually

D) describes how travelers behave when they feel that someone may steal their valuables. So the crime being counted is still pickpocketing theft. “Threat of robbery” in D refers to the situation that triggers the travelers’ revealing behavior, not to the legal classification of the crime but I will change it so we are all clear.

I don’t quite agree with the solution. "If that’s the case, then, inevitably, large numbers of people will stare or grab at the pockets, bags, or other locations where they’re carrying their valuables as soon as they read the new warning signs - thus giving away the precise location of their most valuable belongings to anyone nearby who might be watching, pickpockets included." - this seems too far-fetched imo!

This is an extreme situation and hypothetical as everything else is on the CR. It is far-fetched for real world (most things are oversimplified) but we are asked to solve the question within the confines of a small passage and within the 5 choices. If you think another choice fits better than this far-fetched one, you should absolutely pick it but in absence of the better choice, you pick the best one out of the 5 available.

A little bit more about this question:

That mechanism has real-world support. In testimony to the UK Parliament, criminologist Andrew Newton specifically discussed warning signs prompting people to check their wallets, thereby revealing the relevant pocket to offenders. He explicitly described this evidence as anecdotal, so it supports plausibility rather than proving that signs generally increase theft. Transport Committee testimony, question 13
