Hello everyone,
I’m looking for some honest advice regarding my profile and my chances of getting into the HEC Paris Master in International Finance (MiF) for the 2027 intake.
I have recently completed a double bachelor’s degree in Law and Business Administration at Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (Spain). Given my background, I would apply through the Business track.
My main weakness is definitely my GPA, which is 7.0/10. I know this is fairly average, so I have been told by several current HEC students that I should compensate for it with a strong GMAT score, ideally 670+.
I have been preparing for the GMAT for around two and a half months and recently took my first attempt, scoring 505 on the GMAT Focus Edition. I know this is not competitive enough for HEC, but I am planning to keep working on it and improve significantly. I am currently preparing for my C2 English exam, so I will resume intensive GMAT preparation in September and then decide when to retake the exam.
Regarding my professional experience, I first completed an internship in Litigation & Arbitration, which I’m not sure adds much to my MiF application. I then joined EY Spain in Financial Consulting, where I worked on market research, company analysis and valuations, Excel, Power BI and PowerPoint.
In September, I will be moving to Paris, where I will start a one-year internship in the Investor Relations team of an Asset Management firm. I believe this experience will be much more relevant to my MiF application.
In terms of languages, I am native in Spanish and fluent in English and French. I also have French family, so I have been exposed to the language and culture from a young age.
For recommendations, I currently have two academic references (from professors in Financial Accounting and Econometrics) and two professional references from the Finance team at EY. I will also try to obtain another professional recommendation from my future Asset Management internship.
My initial plan was to apply in Round 1, but I would rather apply in Round 2 or 3 with a significantly stronger GMAT score than rush my application with a weaker one.
I know my main priority right now is improving my GMAT score, but I would really appreciate an honest assessment of my overall profile and my realistic chances of admission. Is there anything else you think I should focus on or improve before applying?

Your profile is actually quite relevant for HEC MiF, especially with the EY Financial Consulting experience and your upcoming Asset Management internship. The 7.0/10 GPA is probably the main weakness, so I agree that a strong GMAT improvement should be your priority.
I’d aim for 670+ if possible, and applying in R2/R3 with a stronger score is probably better than rushing for R1. Your international background, languages, finance experience, and strong recommendations can also help differentiate you.
Overall, I wouldn’t be discouraged by the 505 first attempt—it’s still early. Focus on getting the GMAT up and make sure your essays clearly connect your past experience with your career goals and why HEC MiF.
