Congarts! :) Your answers are correct (unofficial answer is B). But why A cannot be the best answer choice, it fits well the BF passage!?!

The argument starts off with the conclusion. The however marks a shift in the position of the author. The 1st evidence along with the second is used to reject the position that humans caused the decline of forests.

The very first thing that you wanna do is find a conclusion, which is “the deforestation was more likely the result of natural processes than of human activity.”

Both the statement support what the author wants to say. So get rid of c,d and e. A, although little wordy, can be eliminated on the same ground.

A. The ecologist rejects the common view about the Highlands' deforestation. The first claim supports main claim. After all, "however" indicates a change in direction.
B. Correct. First and second bold support main claim, "rejection of a certain position."
C. First bold face is not the position that the ecologist rejects.
D. First bold face is not the position that the ecologist rejects.
E. The first is not the ecologist's argument; it is evidence.

There is a typo in the question. There shouldn't be a line break after "Peat bogs, which consist of compressed decayed vegetable matter, build up by only about one foot"
