is it true that Rice is kinda struggling to attract enough applicants for some unexplained reason?

I am not sure about that! The school still has an acceptance rate of about 35-40% which is on par with other schools in that cluster. In fact, for someone wanting to work in Houston/Texas, Rice is a great option if you cannot get into a top 10-15 school! The total compenstaion for Rice graduates last year (based on BW data) was 120K with about 70% placed in southwest. In comparison, Texas has a tot comp of $126K, UNC 125K, Kelley 122K, Darden 132K, Tepper 135K.

Ofcourse, total compensation should not be the only determinant used to select a school, but the numbers arent that bad for Rice.

If u dont want to get into IB or MC, and you wanna live in Texas, Rice is worth a look!

PS: Darden and other schools listed are meant for comparison and do not represent any clusters (trying to avoid confrontation)

Again, since it is percieved as a regional program (and righfully so), it doesnt get the diverse application base that other schools command. Although, outside of Texas, most Rice alumni are based in the New York region.

I do agree with you that the program is not diverse enough, both domestically and internationally!

I got a scholarship from a top 25 school, but I'm not counting on anything from the higher ranked programs.

Yeah, but I have terrible personal hygiene, so it all evens out in the interview. God never opens a door without closing a window.

Although schools like Rice U is ranked high on rankings (such as US NEws) for their undergrad and other programs, they aren't well known throughout the country.

For example, my fiance's first job out of college was in Corp finance division of fortune 500 company in NYC. They didn't know where Emory University was....thought it was some kinda ghetto school.....

Rice U was the same.......

Sorry to burst the bubble, but no one thinks of Rice (or Emory) as a "ghetto" school. Its undergrad is well respected throughout the US!

Edit - Added Emory

Everyone around the country knows Rice and Emory are top tier universities. And people at fortune 500 should know that too!

Did you not get my point! I never said it was ghetto. I said it wasn't well known to some people in the north!

North as in canada? Just kiddin. But, seriously, I was commenting on the "ghetto" point more than the "not well known" point. Just because a school is not well known in another part of the country, it doesnt become "ghetto".

Rice scholarships are probably not indicative of anything. Rice U has traditionally been significantly cheaper than it's peers. The school's initial grant was an oil field, for a long time they didn't even charge tuition.

Isn't Emory top 5 undergrad on BW? I'm assuming they use similar rankings based on recruiter opinion.
