Please count me in for R2 as well.
Anyone have any thoughts on alumni sending in "unsolicited" e-mails on behalf of your candidacy? I work with a couple Wharton grads who I work closely with have offered, but I know at least one has already been sent by a professor/club sponsor alumnus. I want to make my application as strong as possible after a disappointing R1, but don't want to go overboard.
I read some questions on the Wharton boards and adcom seemed insistent that no additional materials should be sent in lieu of pending applications. That said, I would wait until you get an interview invite, and see if the interviewer has something different to say about that. I also have alums who know me and want to send letters of support. One actually suggested I tell him who would be interviewing me so he can reach out to the interviewer.
From a Math perspective - 1/8 applicants gets admitted and 1/2 is interviewed. If you are in the bottom half, what letter of support can put you above 4-7 candidates competing for that spot? However if you are already interviewed, your odds are 1/1 to 1/4 - any small nudge may be useful, if they allow it. If your interviewer says no additional materials are needed - I wouldn't cross him/her.
