Hi tans22,

A V40 is a high-level performance in the Verbal section - and requires that you have a certain amount of knowledge (grammar/idiom rules, CR patterns, etc.), organizational skills (proper note-taking for CR and RC and using Tactics to take advantage of the built-in patterns that exist in all GMAT questions) and the ability to actively read. Based on the information that you've provided, it's likely that you are 'narrowing the answers down to 2 choices and then "guessing"' a bit too often (and that's costing you points.

Before I can offer you the specific advice that you’re looking for, it would help if you could provide a bit more information on how you've been studying and your goals:

Studies:
1) How long have you studied in total? How many hours do you typically study each week?
2) What study materials have you used so far?
3) On what dates (or approximate dates) did you take EACH of your CATs/mocks and how did you score on EACH (including the Quant and Verbal Scaled Scores for EACH)?

Goals:
4) What is your overall goal score?
5) When are you planning to apply to Business School and what Schools are you planning to apply to?

GMAT assassins aren't born, they're made,
Rich

Hi!
I have been able to score 34-38 in the verbal section on the gmac official practice tests but how do i possibly touch a 40 or even cross it?
Will strengthening my RC help?

If you have touched V38 then you are very near to your goal. It would be nice if you share more data on what are your strenghts and weakensess on the verbal section of the GMAT? I means sectionwise, timing issues, conceptual issues and/or difficulty level problems.

If you will share more data then the experts might be able to give some tailored advice as per your requirements.

All the best!

Hi tans22,

I'm sure you must have a good idea of your weak areas by now. If it's RC, then it makes sense to work more on it. But the way you work on it is what matters the most. Do not just focus on practicing more and more questions. Instead work on the process, learn the right method to read the passage and eliminate answer choices and then practice questions.

To be precise, GMAT doesn't ask you any outside information through RC questions. All the information is in front of you. It's just that you have to read the passage in the right way and take out the relevant information from the passage. And as the answer choices are closely worded, you have to use the right strategies, then you will be able to eliminate the answer choices based on solid grounds and choose the right one.

The right way to read the passage:

It's always better to read the passage in an inferential manner. Understand the purpose of the passage. Summarize the main points of each para to derive the main point of the passage. Do not focus much on the details. You can always go back to the passage to answer detail based questions.

All in all, I would suggest you to work on your weak areas by focusing more on the process. If you need any help with the study strategy or if you wish to have a detailed discussion on how to work on your weak areas, you can get in touch with me using the below link.
