"Announced" need THAT, but in original choice, they refer to Sales but not Stores.
B,D,E contain full of mistake.

by POE: Choose C for simple structure. I do not find any mistake in C.

B. it is closing up to one-fourth of its stores, which
accounted for its poor sales----- pretty awkwardC. it was closing up to one fourth of its stores
because of poor sales.------ announced should have that...IT is incorrect..D. to be closing, on account of poor sales, up to----- "announced to be closing" seems pretty unidimaticone-fourth of its stores.
E. having poor sales, such that up to one-fourth of
its stores will be closed.---- correct.... announced having poor sales, SUCH THAT (this qualifies how poor the sales were)
so E for me.... lets have a few more posts and then get the OA...what say??

Its between B and C for me...the placement of which in B says that its the stores accounted for poor sales when actually the sales in those stores accounted for poor sales...

Will go with C for this one...

Its between B and C for me...the placement of which in B says that its the stores accounted for poor sales when actually the sales in those stores accounted for poor sales...

Like Gmatnub I too got mislead by the "which" trap. I rejected C because of the past tense " was".

Hi Guys,

I am reopening this thread for some further brainstorming.

I think the answer is B. It came down to B and C. Here is my reasoning.

Original sentence says that Trans World Entertainment Corporation is closing up to one fourth of its stores because of the poor sales of these four stores.

In B, which is a bit awkward, this meaning is clearly retained. It is also grammatically correct because 'which' refers to 'stores'.

C, although more precise, in my opinion does not put across the original meaning of the sentence. It might mean that because of overall poor sales of all its stores, it is closing up to one fourth of its stores. This is very different from what is being conveyed in the original sentence.

What do you all think?
