Triangles ABC and BCD are each isosceles. If a = 40 and x > y > a, what is the value of y?
In triangle ABC,
—> if AB = BC, then 40+40+ x= 180
x = 100
—> 2y+ x= 180
y =40
—> y cannot be 40.
If AB= AC, then 40+ x+x= 180
x = 70
—> 2y+x = 180
y = 55
Everything seems correct. Keep it.
—> if y+ 2x= 180
y =180–140= 40
Again, y cannot be 40 (x >y > 40)
Well, y should be equal to 55
The answer is D
