Hi,

I am confused about how to convert some word formats to equations, such as:

1. A is twice as much as B
2. AB that is three times as far from A as from B
3. x is thrice as many as y

How do we understand the ratios here and convert them into the equation. for example, 1st format above is it a=2b, or b=2a?

1. A is twice as much as B
a=2b

Use numbers to substitute
8 is twice as much as 4
8=2·4

If A is half as much as B
2a=b

Use numbers to substitute
4 is half as much as 8
2·4=8

2. AB that is three times as far from A as from B
I don't know what this one is saying.

3. x is thrice as many as y
I don't know how often you would see thrice. Sounds archaic to me. Anyway, same as the first example.

Get used to substituting simple numbers to get an idea of the ratio. At first its confusing, thinking 'the 2 belongs to the A as it is twice'. It will come with practice.

Adding to philipssonicare answer above.

AB that is three times as far from A as from B:

Assuming AB is a point in line A-B.

distance between AB and B is example 10points
that means AB is 30points from A. Hence AB is closer to B than it is to A.
