1st attempt 600 (Q 46 V 27)
2nd attempt 630 (Q 40 V 36)
I wrote the exam first time in May’07 and got 600 (Q 46 V 27). I realized that I need to improve my verbal and I knew my weak points. 46 in Q was low end of my expectation because I lost 5-7 min in Quant due to long break and screwed up my time management. I guessed in last 6 questions of Q.
I studied for another 4 months and wrote the exam second time. My verbal improved from 27 to 36, but my quant dropped to 40. I really did not know how to react to this score.
My biggest frustration is that I don’t know what went wrong. I thought my verbal was similar to first attempt and I got 9 points improvement. I thought my quant was better than first time and I got 6 points less.
I could think of two things for my low quant in second attempt. First, I intentionally skipped 2 or 3 questions(between question number 12-25) because of long calculation involved. Second, I took around 4-5 min each in two easy questions(1st and 4th). I am not sure whether I got penalty for taking extra time on easy questions, I don’t believe so.
All I want is my 46 Q from first attempt and 36 V from second attempt. That would give me my target score of 670-690.
If my verbal had not improved in 2nd attempt, I would not even think to try one more time. Looking at my practice test scores(attached below) and first attempt in the real test, I think I can improve my quant to 46 or more but 36 in verbal will be on higher end of my expectations. I have already invested more than one year in this preparation so part of me tells that don’t leave it hear try once more and finish it. But I am not sure how my next attempt would surprise me.
Additionaly, I am not sure what impression such swing(better quant, poor verbal in first try and poor quant and better verbal in second) would give to admission committee. even if I try one more time.
