Hello everyone,
One of the schools I want to apply to asks for 2 letters of recommendation, and my top 2 choices (the people who have seen my work and development most closely this time) are from the same company and in fact, from the same team.
Option A is the first boss I had in my current company. He was the one who hired me and saw my growth from Jr. Analyst to Associate (2 promotions). He knows me very well and his opinion is the one I value the most.
Since about a year ago, he also got promoted and now has a much broader scope of responsibilities, so my direct supervisor became someone else, Option B. I think he would also be a very good choice because while my previous boss saw how I grew from a Jr. position to where I am now, the latter has seen me managing projects of greater complexity and responsibility.
Both seem like very good choices to me, they know me and my work well, but I don't know if the fact that they have supervised me in the same company and the same team would look bad on my application.
My Option C would be my boss from my previous job, who I also have a good relationship with and I'm sure he could write me a good recommendation, but it's been quite a while since that (~3.5 - 4 years).
What do you think? Should I go with B or C as my second recommender?
Thanks!
Choosing between Option B and Option C for your second letter of recommendation depends on various factors. Here's a breakdown that might help you decide:
Option B:
Pros:
Current supervisor who has seen your recent work, managing more complex projects, and possibly has insights into your growth and performance in the recent role.
Familiarity with your current skill set and responsibilities.
Cons:
Similar professional background and company to Option A, which might limit the diversity of perspectives in your recommendation letters.
Potential overlap in the content of recommendations due to working closely together within the same team and company.
Option C:
Pros:
Offers a different perspective from a previous workplace, showcasing your adaptability and performance in varied environments.
Still has a good relationship with you and likely has positive insights into your work ethic and capabilities.
Cons:
Time gap - it's been a few years since you worked together, which might slightly diminish the relevance of the recommendation in terms of your recent experiences and growth.
Considering these aspects, if Option B can provide distinct insights into your recent accomplishments and responsibilities that significantly differ from what Option A might cover, it could be a valuable addition. However, if you feel that Option B might provide similar perspectives as Option A due to the shared company and team, going with Option C could offer a more diverse viewpoint from a different professional environment, despite the time gap.
Ultimately, the most critical aspect is the depth and uniqueness of the insights each recommender can provide about your skills, work ethic, and growth. You might also consider reaching out to Option B to discuss the recommendation and assess if they can offer a distinctive viewpoint that complements Option A's letter.
