Two years ago, 30% of the robot vacuums sold were made by Vomera. Last year, the total number of robot vacuums sold increased by 30%, and 25% of those sold were manufactured by Vomera. Last year, Vomera’s profit per vacuum was 20% higher than it was two years ago. If Vomera’s total profit from robot vacuum sales last year was $364 million, what was its total profit from robot vacuum sales two years ago?
To find the total profit for two years ago, we can work backward from 364.
Return to the two-years-ago profit per vacuum:
364/1.2 ≈ 303
Return to the total number of vacuums sold two years ago:
303/1.3 ≈ 230
Return to the percentage of total sold two years ago:
230 × 0.30/0.25 = 276
Note: Since 0.30/0.25 = 1.2, if we notice that we are both dividing by 1.2 and multiplying by 1.2, we could calculate the two-years-ago profit in one step:
