Congratulations
tarunk31!
Two very different schools indeed!
1. Carlson has only about 16% of international students and Merage has 53%. Once the Applications drop off from international students who are concerned about H1B and some of the Trump insanity, there is a risk Merage rankings will drop significantly. Carlson has little to be concerned about with only 16% of international students. It is a different feel as well to have over 50% of foreigners vs. mostly mid-westerners in the classroom. You will have easier time at Merage but rewards can be greater at Carlson (you will have to work for it though). Having too many international students dilutes the experience and delays your culture shock and assimilation into the US culture, only creating further barriers for success in immersing yourself into the culture. Having too few is also not good as there is a "natural" segmentation that happens, esp if your English comm skills are not great. Also, if you don't fit in well, people will have a hard time connecting, so it is not uncommon for international students to hang tight.
2. Carlson is the strongest school in Minneapolis, touching the Top 30. Merage is on the far end of Top 40 and competes with UCLA, USC, Pepperdine, UCSD....
3. Weather and lifestyle - Yes, Carlson definitely loses but so does Chicago, Boston, NYC, Philadelphia. Don't tell me you will pass up Booth for Merage.
4. Carlson has a lead in terms of Healthcare and Consulting jobs. Mergage seems to fudge their numbers (only 58 out of 104 reported looking for a job - which means all US Citizens and 5 international students got jobs) and looking at stats not many have gone into tech. You may want to reach out to
asphalt and see how he/she is doing - their profile says Merage and computer software/tech.
I think your draw to Merage is due to an impression of access to tech jobs. I don't know that it is an accurate perspective. Yes, Irvine has a lot of tech and other companies lining the I5 both directions but I don't see them hiring Merage grads (maybe I just don't have the data - that's possible). I think asphalt can probably provide and paint a more accurate picture (though his bschool review was almost too rosy to be credible). Purely looking at US News data, I don't see any grounds to think there are tech jobs waiting on anyone after graduating from Merage. Taking into consideration the risk of the Merage brand tumbling with International Applicant reduction, and having to fight Marshall and Anderson international students for the few H1B jobs in SoCal, I would much rather freeze my tail off at Carlson, where you can be a big fish in a small pond.
Not sure if this is what you wanted to hear or anyone else agrees with me but this is my perspective. There are surely many.
