Disregard my previous post. I checked the app this morning and it now matches the essays on the website.

Yeah this is truly hilarious.

Do you think they're trying to figure out how polished you are? Maybe a sort of "pre-interview" interview?

Maybe...but I think they're just trying to "think outside the box."

So, I'm going to write a 250 word essay and then read it to them and record it. WOW! That is original and 'outside the box' thinking! Sorry for the sarcasm, but it seems if they were trying to come up with a creative question they could have put a little more thought into it.

i find it quite interesting. Yes you can write an essay and then read it in 1 minute, but written essays and speeches are inherently different. Ever notice how different it is when public speakers read off a written essay/speech versus when they do it "free form?" I'm guessing UCLA wants to see what your speaking capabilities are, or if you know how to "write for speech". Trust me, if you're a good orator, then your 1 minute recording will blow any 250 word essay (written or read out loud) out of the water and get you that much closer to an admit. :)

That's exactly what I was getting at. Maybe they want to limit the number of people with accents?

Excellent point! - as politically incorrect as that sounds....there's probably a lot of truth in that.

Would you guys consider UCLA as having a strong finance program? The only aspect of the program that stands out to me is the AMR program.

The finance curriculum is pretty solid and there is much more breadth and depth than other elite schools such as Michigan, Duke, and Haas (and even MIT and HBS).

Solid in IM, especially the placement in LA, which is an extremely small market. Placement in SF is decent from what I've seen as well.

IB placement is in line with other elite schools (with the exception of NYU which is a downright IB factory! :)).

EDIT: BTW, I believe there is a UCLA 2009 Applicants thread, which may be a better area to post questions such as this.
