A little bit about me:

Indian Male - Worked for 7.5 years in tech industry as Buiness Analyst.
Founded a start-up and ran it for 2 years. Deals with Vegan Health Supplements.
US Brands I worked for - Deloitte & HireRight

Will be joining MBA this fall.

My post MBA goal is to transition into the role of Product Management at tech firms like Google/Amazon/Microsoft. I know the tech industry is bit shaky right now but I am in hope that things will get back on track by the time I graduate in 2025.

The offers I have:

University of Maryland - Smith : 50K scholarship + 2 years GA which takes the total benifits to $1,13,000. My cost of attendance after the benfits - around $35000 for 2 years

John Hopkins (Carey) - 60k Scholarship for 1st year and it can be renewed in 2nd year if I maintain 3 CGPA. But they also said that I am shortlisted for fellowship. I will be interviewed next week and if selected, I'll be given full ride plus additional $20k as stipend.

Both are STEM designated MBA programs.

Questions I have:

Question 1:
I would definetly not mind spending $35k at UMD Smith if its a better school than John hopkins. But it is bit difficult to comapre since John Hopkins Carey business school chose to stay out of ranking system for few years now and it has no ranking in any website. Is it a good school w.r.t my goals (product manager in big tech firms)?

Question 2:
UMD had intially offered a flat merit scholarship of $80,000, which upon negotiation, was increased to $1,13,000 (50,000 merit + 2 years GA benefits). Now, if John hopkins offers me full scholarship plus stipend next week. Can I do a 2nd round of negotiation with UMD? Is it advisable? I've paid 1st deposit to UMD and my 2nd deposit date is nearing.

Thank you bb. I just went through the post and I see that Carey students did get into big tech firms which is bit assuring. And this kinda answers my questions.

May I ask you you thoughts on my 2nd questions:

Question 2:
UMD had intially offered a flat merit scholarship of $80,000, which upon negotiation, was increased to $1,13,000 (50,000 merit + 2 years GA benefits). Now, if John hopkins offers me full scholarship plus stipend next week (which they said that they will, based on the 2nd interview they scheduled with me just for the fellowship finalization). Can I do a 2nd round of negotiation with UMD to get the same offer from UMD (Full ride + stipend)?

Is it advisable? I've paid 1st deposit to UMD and my 2nd deposit date is nearing.

I would recommend Smith, they are well known overall and also for IT so I would imagine by ext tech in general. The Beltway/DMV is known as a tech hub. Also I've spent a lot of time in Montgomery County and I really like it. It's a desirable place to live in my opinion and it's close to DC. Like basically a suburb. And my feelings about Baltimore are hard to express without using swear words. The Carey MBA program is quite new whereas there are tons of Smith alums. I don't work much with these programs however, and haven't studied employment reports for each.

Would you also be able to the second question I have regarding re-negotiation (2nd round of negotiation with a B school). This is another confusion I have.

I don't work with these programs often and Carey is rather new and I haven't been tracking it, so I might be way off here but my guess is that UMD might not consider them to be a peer program. And so if it's not a peer program or better then you don't have a great bargaining position. I mean of course you can ask and that's probably going to be expected in some way but I'm not sure that they're going to feel compelled.

Sorry for the delayed response.

I think both programs will provide you with significant learning opportunities and will greatly contribute to your personal and professional growth. I would say no matter the rank, an MBA program is a huge transformation process.

At the same time, rank matters when it comes to getting employers on campus and I think both of these programs will struggle a bit in that department. I suspect an employer is not going to hire you just because you went to Smith or reject you because you went to Smith…. Or Carey.

I don’t think there’s a huge difference from the standpoint of recruiting that the school will help you with so I would focus on reducing the cost to yourself.

I would also consider what is it that you can do to improve your chances of recruiting or internship. If a recruiting manager is going to pick up your résumé, why would they choose you versus someone from Kellogg for example. The reason would be your specific experience or background or your achievements to do as much as you can in those departments to make your candidacy more attractive. You can also do networking and that will help significantly. Messaging for you would be regardless of whichever program you pick, reach out to recent graduates who have tech jobs That you desire and ask them for their advice. You can do it now even even before you made your final choice and ask for their help. You can ping them on LinkedIn and see what you hear back. You can then ping them again in October or November when you start looking for an internship and see if they can Help you out a bit and perhaps suggest a referral or some thing else like that. That’s kind of the basics of building your net work….
