Hi guys!

I've been preparing for the exam for a while, and been stuck in a score plateau for a couple of months now. Practice Test scores (across 6 mocks from Aug-Oct) have ranged from 695 to 715 (more towards the lower side).

Section scores have ranged as follows:

  • Q: 86-90 (90 once, all other instances: 86-87)
  • V: 85-87
  • DI: 81-84

Wrote the GMAT 5 weeks ago and scored a 695 on that too (Q: 88, V:85, DI: 81).

To all the tutors and experts here — if you've helped students in such a situation before, I would appreciate any guidance.

To folks who have overcome a plateau like this, your advice and knowing what worked for you would be invaluable for me.

My target score is a 715 or higher.

Thank you!
Hi 7sentient,

There's no easy answer here. You have an excellent score (695!), and no obvious weaknesses. Do you want to switch focus to your applications now (while staying open to a retake)?

Hi 7sentient,

So, the good news is that you are in a pretty nice spot! Yes, you still want to improve, but clearly, you are pretty talented at the GMAT. One potential reason why you are unable to break 695 is that you may have some gaps that still need to be discovered and addressed. A great way to find those gaps is with topical practice.

For example, let’s say you want to practice Number Properties. You can do so by answering 50 or more questions just from Number Properties: LCM, GCF, units digit patterns, divisibility, remainders, etc.

After each problem set, it's crucial to delve into the questions you answered incorrectly. For instance, if you stumbled on a remainder question, take a moment to reflect. Was it a careless error? Did you fail to apply the remainder formula correctly? Was there a concept in the question that eluded you? This analysis is key to your learning process.

By carefully analyzing your mistakes, you will be able to fix your weaknesses efficiently and, in turn, improve your GRE quant skills. Number Properties is just one example; follow this process for all quant and verbal topics.
