Had a question for out of state candidates to the program. I am also interested in attending the program but have read in other forums that it doesn't really matter where you get a masters in accounting program from as long as you earn a CPA. The cost to attend for out of state students is really expensive and I was just looking to see if you all thought that it's worth the cost to attend UNC vs an in state school. Thanks!

How much accounting have you had? One of the big reasons (Besides placement and ranking) I considered UNC was because they didn't require prereqs, even capping it off at 9 hours. I only took one semester of fin. accounting in UG so the schools I could apply to were few and far between, certainly none close to me. A state school in my home state would end up being prohibitively more expensive for me, because I'd have to go take UG classes for a year or so and miss out on the potential income.

However, it is convenient that I do love the NC area and am hoping to live there in the future. The price is steep, but the placement numbers are pretty amazing. The tuition seems pretty par for the course as far as other similar programs with minimal prereqs. I wouldn't consider UNC if you have absolutely no desire to live there, even though grads are placed all over the region.

it's a similar story for me. I will say though, according to the statistics on their website, 37% of class of 2011 graduates took a job from outside NC.

my only real in-state option, with limited accounting background, was Virginia Tech. it's a significantly worse school, would've taken me 2 years to finish the program, and in the end, it wouldn't have helped me geographically at all compared to UNC (and might even have hurt me, since UNC is located in Research Triangle at the very least - VT is in the middle of nowhere).

Thanks for all of the information everyone. How soon after your interview were you notified of admission?

Those of you who have submitted your security deposit: has anyone heard anything back yet about the next steps other than the information available on the Admitted Students website?

Me too! Everyone previously said a week later they knew. I'm constantly checking my email to no avail. Hopefully we all hear back soon.

Congrats to everyone on their interviews and acceptances! I just submitted my application this morning so hopefully I'll be granted an interview. I took a road trip down to visit the campus during my long weekend for MLK day and it's absolutely stunning. Let's just say I definitely wouldn't mind going back down for an interview. :-D

I have not heard anything yet. I called a few weeks ago and the admissions staff said my deposit was received. My guess is that more information will be sent out after the Jan. 27 deposit deadline.

Ok good to hear. I spoke to Susan Brooks via email and she said she would be sending out a financial worksheet with details that week, but I haven't received any emails yet (and that was on the 9th). I'm guessing, like you, that they're still getting caught up with processing the rest of the admissions.

Is anyone preparing (or at least planning to prepare) for the MAC program prior to its start? As a non-accounting major, I'm eager to get a head start on some of the material, but I'm not sure what materials to look to. Any suggestions?

I wasn't accounting or business... I did audit a financial accounting class. But honestly the program kind of wants you to have a blank slate, be the clay for them to mold. It kind of goes against the spirit of the program to prepare too much. But financial and managerial accounting are somewhat self-teachable and are going to be the foundation of a lot of things. I'd get a working understanding of them and definitely be comfortable with excel.

I agree. The program is intended for people with little to no background in the subject. I took a couple of accounting classes as an undergrad but that was a while ago. If you are really concerned you could go to a bookstore and look at some books on financial or managerial accounting but I wouldn't spend much time stressing about it.

Hi, have you got the admission decision? My interview is on Jan 19th, but I didn't get the result...

I don't necessary think that this is a nice let down. It sounds like they are waiting to hear back from people who were offered admission before you interviewed who might not have responded yet. Until they hear back from everyone who applied early and received admission they won't know how many spaces are still available for the upcoming class. I wouldn't lose hope.

Has anyone else applied in between the deadlines? I spoke to the office and they told me to go ahead and apply several weeks ago. I was wondering if anyone has applied post-December 1st deadline and/or heard anything regarding their application status.

Thanks
