Hi All,
So my choices have boiled down to UNC Kenan-Flagler vs. UW Foster and, at the moment, I'm pretty much stuck. I've gone back and forth over and over. Each has their pros and cons and I can't seem to decide. I've visited each, talked to students, clubs, and career services. As they haven't helped me make a decision, I'll lean on you fine people. Deadline is 4/17. Here's my breakdown:
Career Goal: currently a tech consultant and want to transition into either product management or product marketing management at an elite tech firm. Obviously, Foster's bread and butter is tech as they place around 50% of students into industry. But, will I be one of many at Foster? Would being a "unique" student at Kenan-Flagler be advantageous? I think I could achieve my goal out of either school, but UNC seems higher risk.
Cost: got $$$ at UW but with Seattle's high cost of living, each school's total cost is about equal. Regardless, I am not worried about money.
Ranking/Prestige: I think UNC would give me a more well rounded education and better brand in the marketplace in general. Foster seems to be a bit of an "up and comer" but still is no slouch in the rankings. As I alluded to before, UNC seems high risk/high reward. Foster seems to facilitate a focus on my short term goals as much of their curriculum is focused on your desired career. That being said, let's say in 5 years I want to transition to another industry or profession. Would my degree matter?
Fit: In terms of location, I think I would prefer North Carolina over Seattle, but not by much. The college town and reduced hustle and bustle are appealing to me. But, I live in a large city now and am used to the grind. My hesitancy comes from the high cost of living (currently in TX) and the culture change. In terms of the schools I think both are collaborative and sincere and I could find myself fitting in at both schools.
If I'm missing anything please let me know. Really and truly thanks for reading and commenting. I appreciate it.
Best,
M
