University of California Riverside (UCR) The Next Generation of Business
You have decided you want to get your MBA as a full-time student, but where will you apply? This major decision is not to be made lightly. Assuming you have our choice of schools, location will be an essential part of that choice. You will be in school a good portion of your time, and of course, you will want to choose a school located in an area of opportunity, but you will also want a place where you can unwind and enjoy yourself. One school that should be on your list is the University of California in Riverside School of Business (UCR). One of ten schools in the University of California connection, UCR is a nationally ranked and internationally recognized business school that offers cutting-edge research and delivers diverse leaders ready to take on and change the problems we face in the world today.
The university is located 60 miles east (about an hour) of Los Angeles and has the advantage of being situated near many industries, which is part of the appeal to many students. With so much industry around them, this gives students access to California’s inland empire, which is approximately 27,000 miles of industrial and commercial development, distribution, and tourism.
I spoke with Tamra Johnson, Associate Director of Business Relations, and asked her to tell me more about UCR’s MBA Program and what it had to offer MBA Candidates. "Our school is close to everything. We have a lot of industry around us and half the goods that flow through the United States flow right through our area.” Johnson also added that cost-of-living in Riverside is much less than in the Los Angeles area, which is helpful to students living off-campus. “The university is close to everything, the mountains, the beach, the desert, San Diego, Los Angeles, entertainment, industries. It really is a great place to come study.”
Another reason UCR Business School is a great school to consider is it is also very well known for its diversity, international reach, and opportunities for minority students. “Our school is one of the most diverse in the US," Johnson said. “We are the first public university to offer a gender-neutral housing option to all students.” The school is home to the Office of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion. Their goal is to create a campus environment of mutual respect and to include a greater representation of all backgrounds. This also falls in line with the school's core values, which are:
Embrace Differences
Champion Better Business
Empower Innovation
Achieve Collaboratively
Although the university is considered large, with approximately 25,000 students accepted into their program, the graduate program itself is small, with only 400 students accepted into the program. “With such a small community in our graduate program, it ends up feeling so much like a family, and that is what makes this school unique.” Johnson went on to say that the program offers an extremely collaborative environment with students helping each other whenever needed. “It is not uncommon to see second-year MBA students helping out first-year MBA students.
An example of this would be if you had a first-year student without any business background in need of assistance, you would see other students coming together to help by doing a study session together. Everybody wants to see each other succeed, from our faculty to the other students, because when one of us succeeds, we all succeed.”
If UCR School of Business is on your shortlist, you will want to know what some of the most common traits are that make up a potential UCR candidate. These traits are:
A tenacity for success
Willingness to step out of your comfort zone
Leadership
The above traits, along with your work experience, your essay, and your letters of recommendation, are all going to play a part in whether or not UCR will consider you, so make sure you focus on more than just your GPA, GMAT, or GRE scores are. Present yourself as well-rounded as you can.
UCR’s curriculum structure for MBA students is designed to provide business students with the foundation of business within their first year. This helps give students a basic understanding of business. Students will then get to choose from seven different concentrations to which they can tailor their MBA program to fit their career goals. “We understand that success will look a bit different for everyone. For one student, success may mean starting their own business; for another, it might mean working toward a management position; and yet another person may want to become an analyst within a corporation. Everyone can be successful in their own way and our professors are really vested in the success of our students. It is more than sitting in the classroom teaching.” UCR Students will also need to complete an internship, which is most often done over the summer. This internship will help support their career planning and give them a chance to see what their future will look like.
There are also a lot of resources available for MBA students. UCR has a dedicated career development center that works directly with our graduate students by offering coaching, career assessments, workshops, webinars, job leads, and internship job opportunity leads. The UCR campus has so many resources available to them. There are over 450 clubs offered to them, and then there is, of course, the educational side of resources for when a student needs assistance. They also offer counseling services as well as many other resources which are available for them if needed.
They also have an advising team through Student service that is available to help students with course planning. This team also provides the opportunity for MBA students to connect with other MBA students, not just on the educational side but also on the social side of things. “Pre-covid and hopefully soon post-covid, we feel it is important to do things in person and have some fun. That is also is an important part of the program, and since we are so diverse, we like to show our international students some of our traditions and holidays.” Johnson went to say that the Dean of UCR invites all graduate students to his home for a Thanksgiving meal the week before Thanksgiving. They also celebrate the international students' respective holidays. We celebrate Lunar New Year in Chinese culture and Holy Festival for traditionally Indian culture. We are a very global society, and by doing this, we are able to understand better why we all celebrate what we do and also be able to enjoy it and have fun.”
“When our Graduate Students complete our program, we find that the industries they end up working for are so varied. With so many different students with different end goals, our students end up in entertainment, tech, government, manufacturing, real estate, banking, finance, accounting, as well as many entrepreneurs.”
The UCR alumni network is also of significance to the incoming graduate student. We have more than 10,000 alumni located on campus and around the world. This year we have started to have personalized coffee chats where students can connect with alumni from anywhere in the world and have one-on-one chat sessions with them. The student can ask the alum anything about their own experiences in graduate school; or what happened after they graduated. It is also a time that students can ask about potential career opportunities. Students can start to network right away.
UCR also hosts executive speaker series which includes alumni, current students, and even our prospective students. It allows them to listen to some great speakers/alumni talking about leadership, career, how to break into the industry, how to network, etc. One recent series was from a UCR alumnus who works for Lucas Films marketing for Star Wars.
