A. baseball fields vary considerably in both size and shape

B. baseball fields vary considerably, in size as well as in shape

C. baseball is played on a field that varies considerably in both size and shape

D. baseball is played on fields that vary considerably in both size and shape

E. baseball is played on a field that varies considerably in size as well as in shape

The sentence illogically compares "football" with "baseball fields". So, option A,B, and C are eliminated.

Option E suggests that baseball is played "on a field", implying that there's only one field that changes its shape and size, an illogical possibility.

Option D, therefore, is the correct option.

I had a question about option D. Would D also have been correct, if option D had been:

D. baseball is played on fields that vary considerably in size as well as in shape.

A & B are incorrect since they compare "football" with "baseball fields".

C & E lose parallelism since "fields" has to be paired with "fields" and not "a field".

So IMO answer is D.

IMO the correct answer is D

Unlike football, which is played on standardized fields, baseball fields vary considerably in both size and shape.

A. baseball fields vary considerably in both size and shape - "Unlike football, ...." - "football" is incorrectly compared with "baseball fields" - Incorrect

B. baseball fields vary considerably, in size as well as in shape - Same as option A

C. baseball is played on a field that varies considerably in both size and shape - The above error is rectified, whereas, a new meaning error is introduced...."on a field that varies considerably in both size and shape" - meaning a single field can vary in size and shape - Incorrect

D. baseball is played on fields that vary considerably in both size and shape - CORRECT

E. baseball is played on a field that varies considerably in size as well as in shape - Same as Option C
