Why there is no marker btw north-south and east west?
Can you please help to understand the parallelism and sentence structure after colon?

To answer your query, this sentence uses the "adjective ("north-south") + comma + adjective ("east-west") + noun ("grid")" construction; remember, if two adjectives are used to modify the same noun, they can be linked together using a comma; essentially, this construction conveys that the grid was arranged along both a north-south and east-west pattern.

Further, the portion of the sentence that follows the colon is structured as two independent clauses joined by the "comma + conjunction ("and") in this sentence)" construction.
